Annaba, about 585 000
inhabitants, 600 km from the capital Algiers and
100 km from the Tunisian frontier, is located in
the far Eastern region of Algeria. The wilaya of
Annaba is limited geographically by :
- The Mediterranean sea, at the North
- The wilaya of Guelma, at the South
- The wilaya of El-Tarf, at the East
- The wilaya of Skikda, at the West
The wilaya of Annaba is divided into 12 municipalities
and 06 daïrate (prefectures).
Annaba's natural ressources are the following :
- Important fishing ressources with 80 km long coasts
- The forests of the wilaya spread over 75 500 ha
- 58 600 ha of land are cultivated
Annaba has also got an important industrial area
such as iron and steel industry, metallurgical and
phosphate complexes.
History

Annaba was founded under the name of Hippone, which
remains are of a great archeological importance.
Indeed, the ruins of Hippone are the following :
- The residential area, which mosaics can be
seen at the museum
- Saint Augustin's Christian Basilica, built
at the summit of a hill near the ruins where
the Pagan Temple of Baal hammon was erected.
It was built around 1880 and is a replica of
the Carthage cathedral
- The thermal baths, some of the statues are
exhibited at the museum
- The Forum
Former Phoenician port of call (11th century B.C.),
it became a Numid town and ally of Carthage. Hippone
was the most properous trading town of the African
pre-roman period. It was also a centre for African
christianism and the episcopal centre of Saint Augustin
(392-430). The Vandals and the Byzantines stayed
there for a century.
To visit also : the port, of Moorish and occidental
style, the Cours de la Révolution where the
most famous buildings of Annaba are located, the
Place d'Armes at the very centre of the old town,
the mosques Abou Mérouane and Jamaa El Bey,
the Kasbah, the Hammam El-Kaïd
Annaba is also a seaside resort. A road at the north
of the town leads to many beaches and creeks.
Annaba's touristic infrastructures are important
: 13 ranked hotels, 30 non-ranked hotels, 20 ranked
restaurants, 14 travel agencies.

to get to Annaba ? |
By air : Regular flights from Marseille-Lyon-Paris
or daily domestic flights.
By sea : From Marseille port. The crossing
lasts about 24 hours.
By road : Buses and taxis serve the wilaya
of Annaba daily. A taxi ride from the airport to
the town centre costs between 50 and 300 DA.
