General Information |
MIT started operations on April 16, 1995 at a location near the Atlantic opening of the Panama Canal immediately adjacent to the Colon Free Trade Zone (CFZ). MIT offers efficient and reliable port services to shipping lines transiting the Panama Canal or serving the South America and Caribbean Region. MIT has direct access into the CFZ and highway access to the cities in the Republic of Panama and other Central American countries.
MIT provides customers with secure, flexible and efficient services featuring fully automated vessel, yard, gate and rail operations systems, world-class productivity, container maintenance & repair, around the clock security and on-site customer office space.
MIT’s highly motivated and well-trained work force of over 900 employees and modern facilities and equipment have helped make MIT both the largest and most productive container transshipment hub in Latin America.
Throughout the years, MIT has garnered numerous awards, including being named one of the top 10 most efficient ports in the world by Containerization International. MIT has also being honored 3 times by the Caribbean Shipping Association, most recently as the "Best Container Terminal in the Caribbean" for 2004."

MIT is a joint venture partnership between SSA Panama, Inc. and the Motta and Heilbron families.
SSA-Panama’s parent company, SSA Marine, is the largest marine terminal operator, stevedore and rail terminal operator in the United States. SSA Marine is a privately-owned company with headquarters in Seattle, Washington.
Operations |
MIT is the busiest transshipment terminal in Latin America, handling more than 1.4 million TEU's in 2004. Current facilities include 1,240 meters of quay with 10 gantry cranes and 225 meters of Ro-Ro/breakbulk berth. with a depth in the access channel and alongside of -14 meters.
Projects currenly in progress include the extension of the Ro-Ro berth from 225 meters to 400 meters, and paving of 7 hectares for container storage. Six new super post-Panamax gantry cranes and new yard handling equipment will be commisioned in January 2,006.
Additional projects include the development of MIT Logistics Park, with 40 hectares available for supply chain management infrastructure.
