Margarita Island, along with the Islands of Coche and Cubagua, compound the Nueva Esparta State, ehich is located in the north coast of South America, in the Caribbean, far from the hurricanes route.

The total area of the State is 1,150 square kilometers. Margarita, the biggest of the three islands, has 1,071 square kilometers; Coche has an area of 55 square kilometers and; Cubagua has 24 square kilometers; and it has 315 kilometers of coast. In 1498, Christopher Columbus arrived to Margarita´s COSAT, where the Guaiqueri natives lived. As part of its legacy, Margarita portraits the San Carlos de Borromeo Castle in Pampatar, the Santa Rosa Castle in La Asuncion, the España Fort in Santa Ana, the Caranta Fort in Pampatar and the Libertad Fort in La Galera.
