DISCOVER BULGARIA

BULGARIAN MOUNTAINS

First-time visitors to Bulgaria are invariably struck by the country's natural beauty and, especially, by the predominance of spectacular mountains. In fact, Bulgaria boasts the tallest peak, 2,925-meter Mt. Moussala, in Europe between the Alps and the Trans-Caucusus mountain ranges.

Bulgaria's half-dozen mountain groups range from the gently rounded contours of the Rhodopes in the south to the jagged peaks of the Rila and Pirin mountain ranges. The Pirin National Park, included on the list of UNESCO-protected World Cultural and Natural Heritage sites, attracts hikers, skiers, climbers and spelunkers, as well as the less physically inclined that are drawn to the natural spas and mineral springs.

BULGARIAN WINES

Together with France, Spain, Italy and Greece, Bulgaria is one of the world's largest wine producers. The Bulgarian white and red wines such as Gumza, Dimiat, Pamid, Muscat, Misket, Mavrud and Melnik are well known to connoisseurs. Traditionally, Bulgaria boasts five wine-growing regions, specialized in the production of typical wines. In general, South Bulgaria is known for its red wines, North Bulgaria for white wine. The Black Sea area, too, is an important viticultural region, Bourgas, Pomorie and Varna being its three main centers. The smallest viticultural region in Bulgaria - the area around Melnik famous for its full-bodied red wine - is known for its specific microclimate.

BULGARIAN MONASTERIES

It is impossible to understand the history and nature of Bulgarian monasteries, their place in the nation's consciousness without knowing more of the historic fate of the nation itself. Ever since they came into existence, monasteries in Bulgaria were something more than just ecclesiastical formations or sheltered places for escaping from worldly life, and for religious ecstasy.
The establishment of Christianity in Bulgaria during the 9th century represented in fact the establishment of Bulgaria herself. Firstly, at home - as a spiritual and cultural entity; secondly - among the great European claimants to authority, glory and power. Monasteries became centres of literature and enlightenment, temples of art and monuments of architecture. It is a true statement, but it will not cover all. Very soon after their emergence in the Bulgarian lands, they stood in the front-line of political conflicts. It is quite natural that monasteries where both the script and literature of the Bulgarian people were created centred the nation's innermost hopes and aspirations. Therefore, it would not be exaggerated to say that history of Bulgarian monasteries is in its essence political history. Starting with their struggle to establish Slavonic script and culture; passing through their role as fortresses against the Byzantium empire (11th - 12th century), and ending with tragic but valiant annals recorded not only by the monasteries but by the entire people during the centuries of Ottoman rule (14th-19th century); theirs is a chronicle of the greatest trials Bulgaria had faced.
The 120 monasteries preserved to nowadays are a living chronicle of Bulgaria's culture, creative spirit and national consciousness. Some of the most interesting and original Bulgarian monasteries, closely related to the national history and culture are: Aladja Rock Monastery, Bachkovo Monastery, Dryanovo Monastery, Rila Monastery, Rozhen Monastery, Rozhen Monastery, Troyan Monastery, Ivanovo Rock Monastery, Monasteries at the village of Arbanassi.
