MESSAGE FROM THE RECTOR
On behalf of all community members of the university, it is my pleasure to introduce Airlangga University.
For over 55 years, Airlangga University has always been one of the public universities in Indonesia which contributes to the development of science and technology. It is situated in Surabaya, one of the biggest cities in Indonesia. In September 2006, the university became a state-owned enterprise and this has given a chance to implement university autonomy. With the new status, we have freedom in running the academic administrative management, finance and other activities without any interventions from the government. Such autonomy is needed in an era where we are encouraged to cultivate a competitive academic environment as a prerequisite for conducting world standard research and education. Such standard is necessary for the achievement of one of our main goals that is becoming a center of excellence and world class university.
There are currently 13 faculties within the university, including Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health, Science and Technology, Economics, Law, Social and Political Sciences, Humanities, Psychology, Nursing, Fisheries and Marine Science. Some of the supporting units are the Institute of Tropical Disease, Center for Career Development and Entrepreneurship, Center for Health Care, Center for Printing and Publication, Institute of Research and Community Service, Institute for Education Studies and Development, and Student Admission Center.
There are 1,629 academic staffs, 1,120 non academic staffs, and 22,492 students. We put emphasis on developing international collaborations with overseas universities and institutions, and keep looking for opportunities to enhance our current academic agreements. Our current research interest is on tropical diseases and herbal medicine as part of a strategy in the development of life science. This is due to the situation where some diseases, such as avian influenza, are still endemic in Indonesia and the world. Research on natural products and enzymes are conducted intensively in order to empower various sectors of the society for the enhancement of the quality of agriculture, health, animal husbandry and others. We also take part in developing social science through research and studies in the fields of social, politics and culture. These are our contribution to the nation and the world.
We therefore, extend a hearty invitation to students, researchers as well as any other persons interested in studying at Airlangga University.
May the God Almighty bless our modest endeavor to become an excellent university.
Sincerely
Prof. Fasich
Rector, Airlangga University

HISTORICAL PATHWAY
In 1948 the seed of Airlangga University was founded as a branch of the University of Indonesia and had two faculties, the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Dentistry. On the ninth commemoration of the Heroes Day on November 10, 1955, based on the Government Regulation No. 57/1954, Airlangga University was founded with 5 faculties: Faculty of Medicine; Faculty of Dentistry; Faculty of Law; Faculty of Letters which was based in Denpasar, Bali; and Faculty of Education Science based in Malang.
In 1961, the Faculty of Economics, which was formerly called Surabaya College of Economics, was officially became a part of Airlangga University, and the other two faculties located in Malang and Bali became parts of other universities.
Several faculties were added later: Faculty of Pharmacy (1964); Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (1972), Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (1977), Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (1982), Postgraduate Faculty (1982) which later became the Postgraduate Program in 1991, Faculty of Public Health (1993), Faculty of Psychology (1993) and Faculty of Letters (1998).
Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences was renamed Faculty of Science and Technology in 2008, while at the same time Faculty of Letters was renamed Faculty of Humanities.
Faculty of Nursing and Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science were established in 2008.
The university was named after the famous King Airlangga who ruled the eastern part of Indonesian archipelagoes from 1019 to 1042. The symbol of the university was taken from the royal seal showing the picture of a giant eagle, the riding animal of the God Vishnu, holding a jar containing “Amrta” water which symbolizes the “spirit of eternal life”. The symbol shows that Airlangga University is a source of eternal science.
The university’s flag has yellow and blue stripes in equal rows. Yellow symbolizes majesty and blue is for nobility and wisdom. The colors were derived from the veil which covered the statue of Vishnu during the inception ceremony of Airlangga University on November 10, 1954 by the first President of the Republic of Indonesia.

The roadmap of research in Airlangga University has been made to focus on health- life science and social science. The choices made were based on the current situation in the society, and also anticipating future trends. Currently, the university has decided to focus on research projects on avian influenza, enzymes, and herbal medicine.
In addition to research conducted at individual faculty, Airlangga University has research centers to accommodate multi disciplinary research that includes several faculties’ collaborations. Funding for these kinds of research projects come from different sources, internally and externally. One research centre is the Institute of Tropical Disease, which at the moment hold an important affiliation between PT. Bio Farma and Airlangga University. Bio Farma, an Indonesian state-owned enterprise prequalified by WHO, is a vaccine manufacturer and supplier.
International collaborations on research have been made in several topics, such as malaria research in collaboration with World Health Organization (WHO), HIV/AIDS research with USAID, and avian influenza in collaboration with Kobe University and Kyoto University.
Research on social sciences has also made lots of progress under the supervision of researchers with national and international reputation. Now, the Faculty of Humanities is a center for research on East Java culture.
SPIRIT OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Since 2009, Airlangga University has put more emphasis in nurturing the spirit of entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship has been introduced from early semesters to motivate students to think creatively and develop the spirit of entrepreneurship. It has been conducted through various activities such as educational activities, cooperations with industrial sector and support from successful entrepreneurs. It is hoped that these stimulations would be able to change the younger generations’ attitude from passive and relying to others, into active, optimistic, innovative and creative.
Airlangga University has also held business plan competition, in which the winners will be given funding to put their plans into actions.
Some students have also formed an entrepreneur-enthusiasts club. Supported by their faculties and the university, they have invited experts from the fields to enhance their knowledge, and it has been known that students from this club have run various businesses. Some students are also member of Aseanpreneur, an organization of Asean students keen on entrepreneurship.
UNIVERSITY GOVERNANCE AND ORGANISATION
Airlangga University has been given autonomy since it became a state-owned enterprise in 2006. Therefore, the university has bigger autonomy to design strategic planning in order to achieve its vision and mission, to reach excellence so that it can contribute to the global world. Autonomy has made it easier to response to market needs, so that Airlangga graduates will be able to compete globally.
After becoming a state-owned enterprise, the university organization consists of Board of Trustee, Auditing Council, Academic Senate and Board of Governors. The Board of Trustee made the general policies on how the university should be run, Academic Senate made academic ethics and norms and supervise the implementations.
The university is led by Rector who is responsible for the day-to-day activities of the university, with the assistance of Vice Rectors. There are three departments and each is supervised by a vice rector: academic, student affairs and community service, financial and resources, and cooperation and information system.
