HISTORY

PT. Timah (Persero) Tbk. inherited a long history of tin mining in Indonesia. This has been continued for more than 200 years. The tin mineral resources in Indonesia were found in the land and the surrounding waters of the islands of Bangka, Belitung, Singkep, Karimun, and Kundur.

During the colonial era, tin mining in Bangka was controlled by the colonial government enterprise "Banka Tin Winning Bedrifj" (BTW), while in Belitung and Singkep they were managed by Dutch private companies, Gemeenschappelijke Mijnbouw Maatschappi Biliton (GMB) and NV Singkep Tin Exploitatie Maatschappij (NV SITEM).

A decade after the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Indonesia, three entities were nationalized during 1953-1958. Together they consolidated of three State Enterprises. The State Tin Enterprises Coordinating Board (BPU PN Tambang Timah) was established in 1961 to oversee the three State Tin Mining Enterprises. In 1968 these four entities, together with a smelter unit, were consolidated into the state company Perusahaan Negara (PN) Tambang Timah.

The enactment of Law Number 9 of 1969 and issuance of Government Regulation Number 19 of 1969, the status of PN Tambang Timah and Mentor Tin Smelter Project was changed. In 1976 the company became a limited liability company owned by the Government of Indonesia (Perusahaan Perseroan - Persero) and the name was changed into PT. Tambang Timah (Persero).

In 1985 during the world tin crisis forced the Company to undertake fundamental restructuring in order to survive. The restructuring, 1991 to 1995, focused on reorganization, relocation of the Head Office from Jakarta to Pangkalpinang, reconstruction of the main and supporting production facilities, and the divestment of non-core assets and functions.

By a successful restructuring the company was able to restore health and competitiveness, and made it possible for the Government to partially privatize PT. Timah through Initial Public Offering of its shares in Indonesia and in the international stock exchange. PT. Timah was listed on the Jakarta Stock Exchange, the Surabaya Stock Exchange, and The London Stock Exchange in October 19th 1995. Since then, 35% of the Company's shares were belonging to the public, both domestic and international, while the remaining 65% remained with the Government of the Republic of Indonesia.

To facilitate the growth strategy through business diversification, in 1998 PT. Timah Tbk. reorganized the business group by splitting-up the Company's operations into three subsidiaries. This practically placed PT. Timah Tbk. as the holding company and correspondingly the business scope expanded into mining field, industry, engineering, and trading.

Currently, PT. Timah Tbk. is known worldwide as the largest producing company of tin metal and it is in the process to diversify into different business areas.

Since the end of 1995 the company is listed at the Jakarta Stock Exchange, Surabaya Stock Exchange and the London Stock Exchange.

PT. Timah Tbk. has entirely integrated its marketing strategies, budget structure, and fund allocation. It can operate on 15 to 50 metres sea depth and it can dig more than 3, 5 million metres cubic material every month. Every offshore dredge is operated by more than one hundred workers working in three shifts per day.

Tin in concentrate from offshore dredges is processed at washing plant to get a minimum rate of 30% Sn and then taken to Central Tin Ore Processing (PPBT) with a barge ship to divide tin from other mineral and improve the rate to 70-72 % Sn, which is the minimum requirement for smelter.

Land Mining

Land mining production in the company mining area (KP) is conducted by a private contractor which is the company’s business partner. Almost 80% out of a total production comes from land mining, starting small scale mine with a capacity 20m3/hr until large mine with capacity 100 m3/hr.

This is to find out treasure in the additional map and guidance to meet environment and safety procedure. The company buys production from business partners at a price based on contract agreements.

Processing

To increase tin-in-concentrate grade or low grade concentrate, it processed in Washing Plant. In the process tin-in-concentrate grade can be increased from 20-30% Sn to 76% Sn to meet minimum requirement for smelter. Tin-in-concentrate grade increasing process from offshore mine or land is needed to get a high Sn refined tin with low impurities.

Smelter

The company operates 10 furnaces, of which 9 furnaces are in Kundur, and 1 furnace is in Mentok, Bangka. The smelter process is to dissolve tin-in-concentrate to refined tin. It is a purifying process by using crystallizer to be conducted to get higher quality of refined tin.

Output product is refined tin bars with a weight scale of 16-26kg per bar. The output can be customized and have a trade mark listed on London Metal Exchange (LME).
