UBAYA at Glance

It is the goal of Ubaya to produce experts and scientists, to develop and disseminate science and technology, as well as to utilize their empowerment to increase the living standards of the society, as required by business and industrial society.

Admiring the history and initial aim of the establishment, The Primary Development Plan of Ubaya was developed to cultivate Ubaya to become an urban/cityuniversity that can support the development of Surabaya as the Industrial, Trade, Maritime and Educational (Indamardi) City. As a logical consequence, the continuous development of the Three services of University activities (Tri-Dharma Ubaya) are particularly aimed to advance business and industrial society without ignoring other activities as needed by society in facing the contemporary issues that emerges and grows in its environment. Narrowed by the aforementioned aim, all of national curriculum and local contents of study programs Ubaya are intended to produce graduates at a standard of knowledge competency, ability, and character that meets the ever-changing needs of developing business and industrial communities.

In line with the intention, the development of research activities through its centre and researchers are expected to produce research product and analysis that will be useful to overcome social problems and support the business and industrial society.
The devotion of community services as an application of knowledge will always be intended to support society in facing the massive changes of industrialisation.
Further attention needs to be paid on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
With the purpose of devoting its service of University activities to the nation, Ubaya will always admire its nationalism concept as its identity. It is in line with the hopes of its founders that expected Ubaya to grow as “the seedling place” of this pluralistic youth.
The spirit of “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” as the unifying force will always be cultivated in Ubaya. With that spirit, Ubaya is up till now able to “fly high by its own wings, break through the wide sky, and cross the ocean”, that contains full of obstacles and challenges.
In order to reach that level, Ubaya professionally implements numerous activities. The implementation of continuous development of such professionalism does not ignore the communality being carried out in Ubaya since its establishment as a scientific institution.

History of UBAYA

University of Surabaya (Ubaya) evolved from University of Trisakti (Usakti) Surabaya. The latter was established by the Foundation of Usakti Surabaya that consists of prominent society figures, academics, businessmen and government. It was the initial aim of this establishment to host students, faculty members, and staffs of University of Res Publica Surabaya after screening and clearance.
Under the initiative of Mr. R.Soekotjo, Chairman, Foundation of Usakti Surabaya as well as Mayor of Surabaya, the name for Usakti was altered to UNIVERSITY of SURABAYA. This alteration was legalised by Notarial document Djoko Soepadmo, S.H no. 25 dated 6th March 1968. In the early years, Ubaya had three faculties, namely, the Faculty of Pharmacy, the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Economics.
The date of 11th March 1968 was declared as the anniversary of the university when the construction of campus on Jalan Ngagel Jaya Selatan 169 was restarted. The construction of campus at Jalan Tenggilis was begun in 1981 and used at the first time by Faculty of Economics in 1982.
In 1977, The Vocational Institution for Accountancy (LPK AA) was established, and latter in 1983, the name was changed into Faculty of Non-Degree (FNG). In 1992, the name was adjusted into Centre for Business and Management Education (PPBMT). The mid of 1995, PPMT was again changed into Polytechnic for Business and Industry (PBI). In 1997-1998, PBI offered Diploma program on Economics and English Business Language. In the year of 2000, Ubaya Polytechnic opened 3 study programs of Accounting, Marketing and Secretary. Another two study programs namely Foreign Business Language and Taxation followed in 2002.
In 1989, Faculty of Pharmacy established Professional Pharmacist Program. Faculty of Psychology was established in 1982, followed by Faculty of Engineering in 1986. Faculty of Psychology sets up its Professional Psychology Program in 1998.
Towards the end of 1992, the University of Surabaya was appointed by the Government to run Master of Management Program and Master of Law Program through its Graduate Programs. At that time, Ubaya and another 3 private universities in Jakarta were the only 4 universities appointed by the Government to run the programs.

Vision and Mission

Based on its primary development plans, admiration of history, initial aim of establishment, and rapid growth of globalisation, Ubaya has determined its Vision and Mission.
