Brief History

1925: The firm opened its doors in Miami, representing clients such as Florida East Coast Railway and Miami Electric Light and Power Co.

1935: The firm prospered despite a devastating hurricane in 1926 and the Depression of 1929. It consisted of seven attorneys.

1946: William Steel, a corporate litigator, joined the firm after leaving the legal office of the Air Transport Command. He spent much of his time representing FPL before the Public Service Commission on rate matters.

1954: William Killian joined the firm. From 1958-60, he served as Legal Assistant to Florida Governor LeRoy Collins and Chairman of the State Road Department. He is the senior litigation partner today, having represented numerous state, national and multinational commercial companies in the state and federal courts.

1960: During the firm's early years, clients included Peoples Gas System, P&O Steamship Co. and Bessemer Properties. The list of corporate clients grew to include The First National Bank of Miami, Florida Power & Light and National Airlines.

1966: The firm merged with the "boutique" law firm formed by Louis Hector and Darrey Davis, adding their names to the masthead. Hector, who had clerked for the firm in the summer of 1940, returned after serving as a member of the Civil Aeronautics Board and Trustee of Northest Airlines after the war. Davis had been the first Dade County Attorney after the Legislature created the Metro form of government in 1957.

1975: The firm adopted its new name - Steel Hector & Davis that it has maintained to the present day. With 27 lawyers and the state's blue-chip clients, it was one of the few Florida-based law firms with a true corporate practice.

1980: Reflecting the region's growth, the firm expanded to include 44 attorneys. In a merger with Burns, Middleton, Farrell & Faust, the firm opened an office in West Palm Beach.

1982: The firm opened its Tallahassee office.

1993: In January, the firm expanded its international practice by establishing a presence in Caracas, Venezuela.

1995: In moves that are worlds apart (in more ways than one), the firm opened offices in London and Key West.

1997: The firm continued its overseas expansion, this time in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The roster of attorneys rose to more than 160.

1998: The firm opened its Santo Domingo office; marking the first time it had more offices outside of Florida than within.

1999: The firm expands its Florida presence with new office in Naples
