| • Henri de Montherland said: "Heavens still exist", right after visit to Algeria, more precisely after having stayed at the "Saint George hotel", now called"El-Djazair". • This establishment which has been created in 1889 on the site of an ancient spanish-moresque palace of which many traces still remain, was principally used to accomodate friends and guests of well to do British families, settled in that same area, with all the confort they were used to.  • Among the most prestigious guests, one can name: Rudyard Kiphing, the Duke of Vendôme, the king of Greece, Andre Gide, Francis James, Winston Churchill.  • This establishment became indeed a luxurious world-wide know hotel by the end of World War One. During World War Two, after the landing of the allied forces, on 10th, November 1942, the French-American Conference, discussing the general armistice for North Africa, was held in one of its superb lounges. That conference was led by the American, General Clark with the French Admiral Darlain. The hotel was transformed then as a luxurious general headquarters for the allied forces. • Field Marshall Maitland Wilson, General Mark Waye Clark and Colonell Woodward Stromberg stayed at hotel Saint George Along with many other major officers, and they were joined later by general Eisenhower Commander in chief of the allied forces.  • On 7th, June 1943, a conference was held at the hotel with Winston Churchill and Eisenhower. The latter dinner with King George V, a few days after the conference. • At the end of war, the hotel was damaged by Germany bombing. After having been repaired and refurbished, the hotel re-opened in 1948. With its 180 rooms, the hotel offers its comfort and its charm to businessmen and tourists. |
