The 10th African Union Summit

Our two special reporters Ms.Valérie Janczewski and Ms.Maya Zouaoui will be attending The 10th African Union Summit taking place in Addis Abeba , Ethiopia from January 31st to February 2nd 2008.

It will be a great opportunities to promote the Industrial Development of Africa and communicate about the election of the Chairman of the African Union but also other Members of the Bureaus trough our website and our various publication.

The Chairperson Alpha Oumar Konare urges African Foreign Affairs Ministers to respect the principles of Democracy.

Professor Konore has been called on the African Union Foreign Ministers to insure the implementation and respect of good governance and democracy which he said are principles adopted by the Members States themselves. He showed his concerns about the maintenance of Peace and security within the Continent, the reinforcement of the Commission as well as the representation of African diplomatic missions abroad, the leadership of Africa and its socio-economic and political integration and the need for an African common industrial policy.

Concerning the principle of non difference, one of the main subject this morning was focusing on Kenyan post electoral conflict which is seen as a violation of human rights. He emphasized the need to assist member countries in time of crisis and said” We cannot sit and observe another genocide”, after drawing lessons from the Rwanda genocide”.

He also urged the Former Chief Executive of the Anjouan Island, Union of the Comoros to comply with the AU democratic principles to resolve the problems in his country and said “If the President does not want to cooperate, the AU will be obliged to impose other measures to restore peace in the Comoros adding that the issue affects the credibility of the Commission!”

The Commission also pointed out the case of Somali and Darfur conflicts which he said are the origin of greater instability of neighbouring that contributed to the deployment of peacekeeping at request of the AU Commission.

On the 31 st of January till the 2 nd of February, 53 Heads of African States will meet to discuss about the “ Industrial Development of Africa ”. The up coming AU Summit will feature the election of the Chairperson of the Union and Commissioners. New Members of the Peace and Security Council will also be appointed to discuss about some main topical issues as AIDS Watch Africa (AWA), Water and Sanitation issues (UNSGAD).

This summit was a great opportunities to promote the Industrial Development of Africa and for the African leaders of the world to debate about the African continent key problems such as Chad, Darfur and Kenya conflicts.

The presence of Anand Sharma, State Minister for External Affairs of India was really something to take in consideration. On his reassuring speech, he confirmed the desire of a real and true partnership for the 21st century between India and Africa in order to help developing the industrialization of Africa but also the Human Resource.

An India-Africa Forum was created in 2006, and it has already met twice. The next one will take place in New Delhi from 4th to 9th April 2008; the main issues will be human resources, education, science and technology, agricultural productivity, health sector.

The Libyan leaders Muammar Al-Gaddafi left his mark on this summit when he asked for a common government, for the United States of Africa and threaten to divert $5billions investment in Africa and move it to the Mediterranean region.

Our two journalists have the opportunity to meet with more than 15 head of the States and present them various reports we did about African countries!

Mr. Jean Ping, Gabonese Foreign Affairs Minister has been elected as the Chairperson of the African Union Commission; he replaces Professor Alpha Oumar Konaré, from the Republic of Mali. Mr. Erastus Mwencha (Kenya) was elected as the Deputy Chairperson of the African Union and he’s also the Secretary General of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA)
