19th World Petroleum Congress

Every three years, the petroleum industry’s leaders gather to examine current developments in the sector and explore the challenges and opportunities it faces. The occasion for this gathering is the World Petroleum Congress. This year, Madrid plays host to the 19th World Petroleum Congress. This prestigious five-day event, which coincides with the World Petroleum Council’s 75th anniversary, will feature over 3000 delegates representing over 90 countries. All of the industry’s major players and experts will be in attendance.

The Congress consists of four main blocks: Plenary Sessions, Ministerial Sessions, Special Sessions, and Luncheons. There will also be several social events that capture the culture and food of Madrid and Spain.

In keeping with the WPC’s recent efforts to expand the scope of the dialogue on the industry to include finance, management, social responsibility and environmental issues, the official theme of this year’s Congress is “A World in Transition: Delivering Energy for Sustainable Growth.” Accordingly, a centerpiece of the event will be the Social Responsibility (SR) Global Village. This exhibition will highlight the oil and gas sector’s commitment to promoting community, social, and environmental initiatives by partnering with NGOs and community organizations. The SR Global Village’s aim is to create awareness about these efforts and underscore the industry’s commitment to sharing the benefits.

It is appropriate then that the Congress has been certified carbon-neutral by AENOR, the Spanish Association for Standardisation and Certification. This means that all greenhouse gas emissions associated with the event, including the delegates’ travel to Madrid, will be offset.

WINNE will be covering the event with a special feature on the Congress through its media partners; ABC (SPA), U.S. News and World Report (USA), L’Express (FRA) and Le Figaro (FRA). It will also be interviewing several key delegates and featuring their interviews via transcript and video on its website (www.winne.com). This promises to be a dynamic event and WINNE is excited to be covering it.
