TECHNOLOGY

For Malawi to be competitive it is essential that the private sector improve its productivity. Productivity levels in Malawi are low leading to stagnation in economic activity. Government is, therefore, in the process of establishing a productivity centre with the assistance of the International Labour Organisation. The Productivity centre would act as a centre of excellence in productivity issues.

Industrial Development
In addition to the establishment of the productivity centre, government remains committed to encouraging industrial research and technology development as one of the instruments towards achieving higher productivity as well as competitiveness. The Malawi Industrial Research and Technology Development Centre will be expected to play a major role in this regard. MIRTDC has clearly demonstrated the need for such services in the light of the achievements made so far in working together with the private sector. For example, with the centre’s intervention a company was able to make substantial savings through appropriate conservation of energy in the production process. To encourage industrial research, the centre in partnership with the private sector, will establish a Technology Development Fund to facilitate sector-specific research and development.
