HANDICRAFTS

Silverware

A specialty of Kandyan provinces. Exquisitely carved, chased and filigree work. Items include jewellery, trays, trinket boxes, tea and desk sets, candle sets, candle stands, and ashtrays. Sterling silver as well as plated ware is available.

Brass work

Also mainly localized in the Kandyan provinces, cast or wrought brassware items ornamented with fine carving, silver or copper inlays and damascene, include boxes, trays, lampshades, lamp stands, hinges, mountings, vases, statuettes, figurines and oil lamps.

Batik from Kamdy

Reed rush, bamboo and rattan ware

Mats, purses, bags, baskets, lampshades, tablemats and chairs.

Dumbara Mar work

The Dumbara valley of the Kandyan highlands is the centre of this highly localized craft. The base fibre, which is obtained from the niyanda plant, is woven into distinctive age-old designs. The ranges of items comprise mats, bags, room dividers, screens, tablemats, and cushion covers.

Lacquer ware

Another highly localized craft especially around Hapuvida, Laggala and Ukuwela areas of the Kandyan highlands. The lac pigments were traditionally obtained from insect resigns collected from the forest. The boiled down lacquer is applied expertly by fingernail or with revolving lathe.

Demon Mask

A specialized craft of the southern province, these mask were originally (and still are), used in demon propitiation and curative rituals. They make colourful and dramatic decor items and are available in a range of sizes from miniature to outsize.
Puppets and Demon masks

Batik

Colourful, dramatic fabrics, designer garments, accessories and decor items in a wax resistant dyeing technique of Indonesian origin but distinctly Sri Lankan design.

Handloom textiles

A handicraft with ancient roots, handloom woven cotton and silk textiles has seen a major revival recently. Vivid colours and attractive textures and weaves make them popular choices for furnishing, accessories and in Sri Lanka's burgeoning garment industry.

Lace

Exquisite hand made pillow, crochet and tatting lace is very much a southern specialty introduced in the 16th century by Portuguese colonizers. Apart from collars, table linen and doilies, it is also available in lengths.

Drums and Musical Instruments

A wide range of traditional drums and flutes.

Pottery

Low fired terracotta domestic pottery, goblets, tiles, vases, ornaments and toys.

Wood carving

Yet another ancient craft. Exquisite wall plaques, ornaments, occasional tables, paper knives and spoons

Miscellaneous items

Papier-mâché costume dolls, embroided garment and linen
