Key policy objectives

• To fulfil SHC’s mission, SHC objectives are to:

• Improve the company’s public image by restoring customer confidence in the company

• Manage the company’s physical and financial assets in a most cost effective manner to achieve immediate and long-term financial viability.

• Embark on a programme of expansion in housing delivery to meet present and future customer needs.

• Provide customers with a timely delivery of good quality housing and at affordable prices

• Inculcate within the entire company a new ethic of service delivery and a sense of pride in achieving results

• Collaborate with the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing and other relevant agencies to formulate policy on future national housing development in Ghana

• Intensify training of staff in all operational zones to improve upon their quality and performance.

Current Core Activities

The company’s activities cover three main areas, namely:

• Housing Development

This entails the acquisition of land, planning and development of the land into housing estate with requisite amenities. The houses, school sites etc are leased to individuals and institutions both private and public.

• Serviced Sites / Plots

This entails the acquisition of land, planning, development and provision of basic utilities thereon for leasing to individuals and institutions to build houses by themselves, while the company controls the estate.

• Estate Management

This entails management of the company’s old and new housing estates trough issuance of leases, consent for assignment, mortgage and improvement to houses, renewal of expired leases, development control, etc.

Historical Background

The origins of the current State Housing Company (SHC) can be said to have started in 1939, when the county in general was faced with the acute problem of housing for the displaced earthquake victims and the discharged soldiers of then South East Asia Command of the 2nd World War who had returned home. This led to the establishment of the Housing Department which became Housing and Maintenance Division of the then Ministry of Works and Housing.

This Division metamorphosed into the Gold Coast Housing Corporation in 1955 and in 1965 became known as State Housing Corporation.

In July 1995 the corporation was converted under the companies code to a Limited Liability Company and currently operates as a fully fledged commercial Enterprise, continuing the same initial objective of constructing and managing estate housing units for all Ghanians living home and abroad.

Since 1956 State Housing Company Limited has been managed by 24 managing directors and 2 interim Management Committees (IMC), all of them working assiduously to produce a total of 86 real estates country wide. In the same vein our range of house types has improved over the years.
