CULTURE, SOCIETY & PEOPLE

RASHID DIAB

pintor

Is a famous artist born 1957, who studied and lived in Madrid Spain for many almost two decades. He is now returned back to the Sudan and one can visit his home which is a gallery too. His works have been exhibited around the world in individual collection as well as in big museums.

IF you are interested in buying some of his pieces, there is a shop also for that. His home gallery is in Amarat close to the airport, street number 47. Phone +249-11-463 352 or email daragallery@hotmail.com.

MUSIC

The Sudanese music is a fascinating mixture of Arab and African influences. There are live concerts especially at the hotels, and it is possible to buy tapes (cd's are not so common).
WEDDING

henna ceremony

Sudanese wedding is not a success unless there are more than a thousands guests. So forth, if you are invited, go and see this strong institution. There is a local band or singer and the bride dances for the guests with her family and or friends, and she also has almost as many dresses as she can afford -one for each type of music. Even more interesting is if you are invited to the henna-night before the wedding, where the women gather together and make henna, the body pain on their feet and hands. If you want to do simple henna for yourself, you can visit the local beauty salon Losha for that. Ask taxi drivers or hotels for address.
