A sleeping giant - On the right track

On the right track

Tanzania is on the move of development and the private sector is quickly taking the country towards economic recovery. The country's strategic position along the eastern coastline of Indian Ocean, its peaceful political environment, friendly people and vast potential of unexploited resources all combined together make Tanzania one of the most attractive areas for private investment in Africa. After almost ten years of economic and political reforms, the country has made some significant achievements towards becoming a regional economic giant and such developments can only be complimented by receiving more private capital and expertise from foreign investors.

On the political reform side, the country adopted multi-party politics in 1992 via a new law allowing a formation of political parties. By 1995, there were thirteen political parties involved in parliamentary and presidential constituencies.
Unlike in other African countries, Tanzania's political transformation has gone on smoothly with few isolated incidents between the ruling and opposition supporters, which has though never reached an alarming scale of causing instability. The second multi-party elections are due October 2000, and so far preparations are going on smoothly and there is hope that I comparison to the 1995 elections, the 2000 general elections will end peacefully. Considering such stable political and economic environments, the country is heading towards a success by welcoming any serious private investor to this East-African centre point of trade offering a market over 200 million people.
