HISTORY

At the end of 1989, a small group of young entrepreneurs living in Angola decided to create their own company to respond to perceived customer needs in the key developmental areas of energy, communications, refrigeration and water systems. Starting out as suppliers of small diesel generators, they called their company Jembas.

The sales, installation and service of generators and the development in wireless communications have represented much of Jembas' growth for over a decade.

Jembas' success is based on its technical reputation for knowing the quality products that it sells and services and for the high caliber of its technicians and support staff, its large stocks of equipment and spare parts and the branch offices it maintains throughout the country, offering a single source supplier from the initial application stage through to follow up service and maintenance.

JEMBAS SAILFISHING CLASSIC 2001. 425°ANIVERSARIO DE LUANDA

Angola is blessed with excellent opportunities for game fishing with special emphasis on sailfish and blue marlin. The Ail Tackle world record for sailfish and several other sailfish records are held by sailfish caught off Luanda. Game fishing is currently the only sport in which Angola holds world records. Half of the 20 world line class records were caught off Luanda and the Largest Atlantic sailfish (64 kg) was caught in Angola. Although no records are held here for blue marlin the average weight is around 200 kg and the largest caught weighed 428kg.

For the 3rd consecutive year JEMBAS will hold the Jembas Sailfish Classic, which this year celebrates Luanda's 425th Anniversary. The event takes place on the 23rd, 24th & 25th of February and participants are requested to contact the Club Naval of Luanda for details. The three-day competition is expected to attract up to 30 teams involving around 120 anglers and for the first time two full ladies teams will be competing.
The competitors are of over 20 nationalities and include some visitors from abroad. For the first time in a fishing tournament in Angola, SuperSports Channel will be sending in a team from South Africa specifically to cover the event.

The Jembas Sailfish Classic strongly supports the Tag & Release program that entails the video filming of the capture and the tagging and the subsequent release of the fish alive. The scoring system used encourages the release of the fish e.g. if a released fish weighed around 30kg it would be given the same points as a 40 kg fish.

The Jembas Sailfish Classic was the first competition since independence where only sailfish are targeted. Sail fishing requires different techniques as for marlin fishing and is quite specialized.

In the first Jembas Sailfish Classic, a IGFA world record was achieved with a 58.8kg sailfish. The 20 teams only caught 7 sailfish, and the winning team was the Marlinheiros with 3 sailfish.

In the second Jembas Sailfish Classic Il, the 27 participating teams caught sailfishes, and the winning team with 2 sailfishes was Blue Bayou.

Most fishing competitions in Angola target billfish (sailfish & Blue marlin), and the tournaments use the IGFA (International Game Fishing Association) rules.

The Prize award ceremony will take place in Mussulo Island - at Pelicano - Onjango on
Monday 26th February at 18:30 hours, with the presence of His Excellency the Governor of Luanda.

Brief History of billfishing tournament in Angola

60-70's CAPL (Clube de Armadores de Pesca de Luanda) started competitions and many IGFA records were set.

1975 With Independence much of the enthusiasm vanished, and little sail fishing was done.

Late 80's Competitions started again in 1988; a major competition was organized by the ADM (Associaçào dos Desportos do Mar). This tournament has been held every year since.

1993 First bilIfishing tournament organized by the Clube Naval de Luanda (CNL)

1999/2000 Season: 10 tournaments organized, 7 by CNL and 3 by AND

2000/2001 Season: 9 tournaments organized, 6 by CNL, 2 by ADM and 1 by Clube Nautico de liha de Luanda.

Current Atlantic Sailfish Records

Most of the large ones were caught out off Luanda and the fact that the largest sailfishes are found out off Luanda is well known internationally.

The Largest Atlantic sailfish weighing 64 kg (called the "Ail Tackle Record") was caught off Luanda in 19/02/94 by Alfredo de Sousa Neyes.

There are 20 different records for sailfish depending on how the fish is caught, and there are 10 for men and 10 for women. Angola currently holds the following records:

MEN

Line Class Weight offish Date Angler
61b 39.0 kg 14/2/74 A. de Jesus Gaspar dos Santos
161b 58.8 kg 21/2/99 Iain Nicoison
201b 58.0 kg 30/3175 Mario Rui Alves da Silva
301b 55.2 kg 25/2/96 Hakan Ekberg
801h 60.6 kg 22/3/98 Eduardo Vale Moreira

WOMEN

Line Class Weight offish Date Angler
201b 48.3 kg 15/3/75 Pamela Jean Durkin
301b 58.1 kg 20/2/94 Bernadette Nicoison
801b 50.2 kg 04/03/00 Bernadette Nicoison

Angola therefore holds 9 of the 21 available world records for sailfish. The rest are manly held in Senegal.

Angola also holds IGFA records for Jack Crevalle (3 different records) and the Ail Tackle Record for Guinean Barracuda.

FACE OF AFRICA

Organized as well by Jembas for Angola, Face of Africa will welcome this year 2 Angolan candidates ;

Related by the Face of Africa representative: Jan

"We spent the last three days in Luanda scouting for a Face of Angola. Filomena Oliviera from MultiChoice Angola and Carla Soares from the Miss Angola Committee were wonderful hosts from the minute we arrived and their organisation was very professional. We had a casting on Friday where they presented us with approximately 70 girls.

There are many beautiful girls in Angola with great physiques, but they are petite, so we were not expecting to see many tall girls. Well, it was a pleasant surprise to see the number and variety of girls at the casting.

Since I was here three years ago awareness of the competition has grown. It used to be non-existent! The media have promoted the project well and we salute them. The Miss Angola Committee had gone to 11 of the 18 provinces to pre-scout for us. Modelling seems to be a growing industry and a number of agencies were present at the casting.

Half the girls made the height requirement and it was obvious that the organizers had been very thorough with their pre-casting. We decided to call back six girls that impressed us for the press conference that would follow on Saturday. We were due to look at more girls in the morning.

We were just about packed up and ready for the press conference when a man came up to us in the foyer of the hotel and said he would show us the most beautiful girl in Angola. We told him he would have to be quick as we were about to make our final decision.

Well, well, well...he walked in with 18-year-old, 1.78 m tall Jessica Simoes and we were bowled over! We had our Face of Angola! Our host Filomena has been a wealth of information. Angola is the second largest country in sub-Saharan Africa after the Democratic Republic of Congo. The long war has caused havoc with people's lives - four million of the country's 9 million people have been displaced by the war and of these three million are living in squalor in Luanda.

Despite all this the Angolans are kind and warm. But it is not all war and hardship and the Angolan scouting team did a great job of showing us another side of the country. Jessica's profile was filmed on a secluded, idyllic island just 15 minutes by boat off the coast.

The beaches are magnificent and with careful development Angola could become one of the best holiday hotspots on the continent."
