Instituto de Desenvolvimento Agrario

The Institute for Agricultural Development (IDA) was created in 1989. This public institution is a legal entity and it has financial and administrative independence. Its main area of activity is agricultural and rural development.

The general objectives of IDA are the following:

• To provide technical assistance on a constant basis to small farmers and peasants.
• To help small farmers and peasant to sell their products.
• To ensure that policies and strategies for rural development are encouraged, coordinated and executed.
• To initiate actions towards the rehabilitation and development of rural communities.
• To support those small farmers and peasants encountering difficulties with production.
• To give advice and support and work closely with other institutions devoted to help the agricultural sector.
• To draft, encourage and support development projects for small farmers and peasants and their organizations.
• To establish agreements, coordinate and be in contact with other public and private bodies and institutions, whether local, national or international, when deemed necessary.
• To support rural communities in their projects of local production capacity reinforcement.
• To increase the production and productivity of family agricultural businesses.

IDA is currently present in all18 provinces of the country and in a large number of towns, and it maintains good relations with international institutions such as FAO, IFAD, AFDB, WB, SADEC, and bilateral cooperation agreements with the EU and some American and Asian countries.

Despite the great potential of Angolan agriculture, which is rich in cereal, cassava, sweet potato, banana and a wide range of fish and vegetables, it is nowadays a weak economy sector. Therefore IDA has an essential role for the development of agriculture in Angola since we will only be able to fight hunger and poverty by encouraging this sector and assuring access to food for the whole population. For this purpose, IDA works closely with ANIP and AFDB, with a focus on both the technical training of farmers as well as good human resources management, in order to improve agricultural products in Angola and increase their competitiveness.
