Offshore and the Cuanza Basin. The first well was
drilled in 1915. In 1973, oil became Angola’s prin-
cipal export. By 1974, production reached 172,000
bbl/d, which was the maximum output during the pre-
independence period.
Angola has proven oil reserves of 9,5 billion barrels
as of January 2011. The majority of the reserves are
located in Angola’s offshore blocks. Proven reserves
are also located onshore near the city of Soyo. The
majority of Angolan oil is medium to light crude (30
degrees–40 degrees API) with low sulphur content
(0.12%–0.14%).
Crude Oil Production 1980–2010
Oil production in Angola is concentrated in numerous
offshore blocks. The offshore blocks are divided into
three bands: (band A) shallow water blocks 0–13;
(band B) deepwater blocks 14–30; and (band C)
ultra-deepwater blocks 31–40. Block Zero is located
offshore of the Cabinda province and accounts for
approximately 365,000 bbl/d of Angola’s oil produc-
tion, production in Block 14 is approximately 220,000
bbl/d, mostly in Benguela, Belize, Lobito, Tomboco
(BBLT) project and Tombua-Landana Project. Chev-
ron is the operator of these Blocks.
Block 15, the largest producing deepwater in Angola,
is operated by ExxonMobil. The Kizomba A is cur-
rently producing close to 160,000 bbl/d, Kizomba B
near 170,000 bbl/d and Kizomba C about 160,000
bbl/d.
