Transport
The Caminho de Ferro de Benguela (CFB) connects
the port of Lobito to the eastern border town of Luau
in Moxico province, to the rail networks of south-
eastern DR Congo, to Zambia and indirectly to the
rail system of South Africa. In the 2000s, most of the
infrastructure was heavily damaged or destroyed. In
2005 talks were initiated between Angola and Zam-
bia to restore operations. CR-20 began working on
the Benguela Railway in June 2005 but was delayed
temporarily due to financial constraints. Operations
resumed in 2008 shortly after the Hong Kong-based
China International Fund (CIF) poured US$ 330 mil-
lion into the project, which brings the estimated total
investment in the Benguela railway project to US$
1,8 Bn.
The Caminho de Ferro de Moçâmedes (CFM) is
a 907 km railway line that links Namibe (formerly
known as Moçâmedes until 1985) to Menongue in
Cuando Cubango province, Huila and onto the bor-
der of Namibia. The civil war had severely damaged
the railway and rehabilitation began in 2006 with
support from China. Reconstruction work on the
railroad was at a halt from June 2010 for over five
months due to the international financial crisis. Re-
construction re-started in November 2010 and it was
announced that it would be managed by an Indian
company called RITES. Repairs to the Caminhos de
ferro Namibe (CFN) are due for completion in 2012.
