WHAT TO SEE
Benguela and Lobito have numerous Art Deco build-
ings, the Benguela Radio is a nice example.
BENGUELA CITY
Benguela is the second largest city of Angola, nota-
bly thanks to the large activity of the port of Lobito.
Benguela was founded in 1617 by Manuel Cerveira
Pereira and gain final denomination after the occu-
pation by Filipe de Benguela.
The history of Benguela is closely related to the Ben-
guela railway (Camniho de Ferro Benguela - CFB)
that links the country to Zambia and the copper belts
of of Katanga in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
As an historical trading center, this commercial axis
has been essential in the development of the prov-
ince and Angola.
CULTURAL SITES
Ermida da Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes
Built in 1957, this hermitage built on the crest of the
mountain worships the saint on the 17th of May.
Igreja da Nossa Senhora do Pópulo
Baroque style church built in 1748, has been classi-
fied national historical monument.
Capela Nossa senhora de Graça
Located 3km far from the city in Cavaco. Try to at-
tend the celebrations on 7 and 8th of December.
Ponta do Sombreiro
You can access this lighthouse located in the west-
ern part of the bay from Caota. Go to Caotinha for
the view on Boa Vista.
Igreja da Nossa Senhora de Fátima
Cathedral with a particular steep-pitched roof built
in 1963.
Palácio do Governo
First residence of the governor, it now hosts a school.
National Archeological Musuem
Over 9.000 pieces are permanently exposed.

NATURE AND WILDLIFE
Praia Morena
Great city beach to hang around that goes about 10
km towards the south. Go and have a drink at Porta
Avioes, a beach restaurant and bar with Art Deco
setting.
Praia Caota
Located at 10 km from Benguela, you will be amazed
by the scenery composed of rocks into transparent
blue waters. Perfect place for diving
Praia Caotinha
Small beach and very clean water that you can ac-
cess by Caota Mountain.
Praia Baía Azul so called for its blue waters
If you are fond natural life, you should definitely visit
the National Park of Cimalavera spread over 150
km2 and the Chongoroi and Cubal forest reserves.
Check also the Reserve of The Buffalo. Antelopes,
zebras, elephants and lions can be visible in Mor-
ro de Capelongo, Planalto Grande, Maitse, Binga,
Catengue, Coporolo and Coalongo.
LOBITO
Lobito is the perfect get away from Luanda. Go to the
very famous Restinga sand spit, an improved ver-
sion of Ilha do Cabo in Luanda. Colonial houses, Art
deco buildings such as the Post Office, the Casino
and Imperio Cinema Theater, a stunning view on the
bay, laid back restaurants and outdoors bars, every-
thing to enjoy and relax.
