WILDLIFE
The Forest Reserve of Kakongo
- Maiombe forest
- covers a total area of 400 km² and forms the south-
west margin of the Congo Basin’s tropical rainforest
and the geographical limits of several forest-dwelling
species, including central chimpanzees and western
gorillas. It is located on the watershed of the Loémé
and Chiloango rivers, north northeast of Buco-Zau,
and has the greatest number of species in Angola
that are restricted to the Guinea-Congo forest biome.
The tropical Maiombe forest
covers 290,000 hec-
tares is very well known for its density, intensity of
greens and variety of precious woods such as eb-
ony, black wood, African sandal wood and pau ferro.
Some trees are more than 50 m high!! Elephants,
gorillas and numerous species of birds. Passionates
of ornithology should definitely consider a stop at
Pântano de Lândana
, sanctuary for pelicans and
flamingos.
The rivermouth of
Chiloango
, pole of touristic attrac-
tion is navigable over a great lenght. The river used
to be the privileged communication to transport the
timber from Maiombe forest.
Manenga and Tchúquisse lagoons in Massabi
and Sassa Zau lagoon in Malembo
are worth a
visit, especially if you are found of fishing.
The beaches of 10 de Mayo,
Lândana, Fútila,
Malembo, Mandarim, Cabassango and Capelo
are highly suitable for nautical activities and fishing.
Navigation with small ships is possible on the riv-
ers of Chiloango,
Luango, Lucala, Lulondo, Fubo,
Nhama and Luali.

Menongue Day is celebrated on the 21st of October.
Cuando Cubango is the second largest province of
Angola, located at the south-east, it has borders with
Namibia and Zambia. Two roads connect the prov-
ince to Bié and Huíla.

Menongue,
the capital city of Cuando Cubango is a
quiet town, terminus of the Moçâmedes railway un-
der rehabilitation that links the city to Namibe prov-
ince. Menongue is divided in two by the Kuebe river,
tributary of the Kubango/Okavango river.
Domestic flights connections to Lubango, Huambo,
Ondjiva and Luanda are operated by TAAG.
Bus connect Menongue to Lubango and Kuito.
There are huge reserves in
Luina
(13,950 km2),
Luengue
(16,700 km2),
Mucosso
(25,000 km2)
and
Mavinga
(28,700 km2) where you might have
a chance to see elephants and rhinoceros but be
aware there is a risk of land mines.
Other sites of interest include the Maculungunfo
waterfalls, Mount Malova and the rupestrian carv-
ings of Bototo.
