Houston Express
is a private charter service, op-
erated by U.S based World Airways. The flights are
conducted in conjunction with the United States-Af-
rica Energy Association with substantial involvement
and support from SonAir Serviço Aéreo, S.A., a sub-
sidiary of Angola's state-owned national petroleum
company Sonangol.
Initially the Houston Express was only available to
members of the US Africa Energy Association, but
since 2010 it is also available for the general public.
It is the first company to provide direct transporta-
tion of passengers and cargo between Angola and
the United States. The airline provides three times
weekly service from Houston to Luanda.

BY BUS
There are no bus links between Angola and other
nations.
BY BOAT
No official ferry link Angola to other nations. As of
2003 it was at least possible to enter Angola via a
small passenger ferry near Rundu in Namibia. There
was both an Angolan and Namibia border official
presence. The crossing was mostly used by Ango-
lans for the purposes of acquiring food and other
supplies in Namibia.
As of 2007, there are ferries running from the en-
clave of Cabinda to Luanda. They carry cars as well.
We recommend to seek local advice for updated
timetables.
International shipping can reach Angola via the ports
of Luanda, Lobito, Namibe and Cabinda. Angolan
law requires that all cargo purchased abroad for
import to Angola has a loading certificate to unload
cargo upon arrival. The loading certificate must be
obtained by the shipper/forwarder before loading
the cargo, and it should be obtained from one of the
CNCA agents around the world. Most major ship-
ping ports have a CNCA representative from whom
a loading certificate can be obtained.
BY CAR
Before driving into Angola, check with the Ango-
lan embassy in your country the papers you need
to show at the border. At the land borders you will
not be able to get a visa, so it is better to obtain it
from the appropriate embassy before travelling.
You can enter from Namibia at the border post near
Oshikango(Namibia)/Ngiva(Angola). Entering from
the North was, as of 2002, via Luvo, a small town
on the Kinshasa-Matadi 'road'. Road conditions how-
ever might not be quite what you are used to. Travel-
ling by road can be dangerous, especially during the
rainy season which can cause large potholes and
erosion. Landmines remain a problem on some sec-
ondary roads in more remote areas. Areas with sus-
pected landmines are generally clearly marked and
travelers should take these warnings into account.
Renting a Car
The price to rent a car can vary from 100 to 400
USD, depending on the vehicle category. We highly
recommend you to hire a driver as driving in Luanda
is complicated and stressful. Angola has little pub-
lic transportation. Most inter-city transportation in
Angola is done by small blue and white vans called
“Candongueiros” or large buses. The average cost
for a driver is around 30 USD per day. Please refer
to the car rental companies in the Luanda Business
Directory chapter.
