Strategy

SO FAR, SO GOOD

Before 1992, NITEL, existed in a virtual monopolistic environment in which it commanded overwhelming influence in the telecommunications terrain. This influence included calling the shots in tariffication/modernisation and dominance over subscribers.
With the promulgation of Decree 75 of 1992 which liberalised the telecommunications industry, it became clear that NITEL’s monopoly of the industry was coming to an end. NITEL had to go back to the drawing board to chart a new course for a new NITEL, which will have to find its feet in a deregulated industry. Some of the strategies it then came out with included:

  • an aggressive customer relations drive

  • an ambitious network expansion and modernisation programme

  • a revolutionised staff welfare/remuneration scheme.

  • an impressive revenue generation drive

  • a robust project financing strategy

  • a systematised revenue collection drive

  • These efforts and strategies paid off in their respective entities leading to the transformation of the company in all aspects. This placed NITEL in good stead for the actual deregulation of the industry.
