AEL DRC SPRL) is a leading producer and supplier
of commercial explosives, initiating systems, and

AEL Zambia Plc. was established in 1965 as Kaf-
ironda Factory, a production unit for Anfo, a fuel oil/
ammonium nitrate bulk packed ‘
’safe’’ explosive for
the opencast copper mining industry in Zambia. Dur-
ing the development stage other explosives and
accessories were supplied by African Explosives
MAIN ENTITIES
and Chemical Industries (A.E&C.I) a South African
based company jointly owned by de Beers and I.C.I.
The production transitioned to produce nitro-glycerin
explosives, powders, and gelatins, initially based on
a master mix supplied by A.E. & C.I. and continued
up to 1997 when the first modern bulk emulsion plant
was completed on the site. The plant produces bulk
emulsions using state-of-the-art formulations and
stable raw materials as well as oxidizer solution for
the package explosives plant, which was also in-
stalled in 2008. Shock tube assemblies as well as
electric detonators are also produced at the factory.
AEL Zambia Plc. is a LuSE-listed company since
2006 and is a subsidiary of AEL Mining Services
Limited (AEL Group) of South Africa.
AEL is currently consolidating on its position as the
leading developer, manufacturer, and service pro-
vider of explosives, initiating systems and blasting
solutions in Africa and beyond.
AEL is looking at bulk and initiating systems formula-
tion and innovations that will afford more energy at a
cost advantage for its customers.
With future mining developments being envisioned,
AEL Zambia Plc. continues to focus on a growth
strategy that ensures easy deployment within Zam-
bia and the Central Africa region.
AEL Zambia Plc. draws its strength from the syner-
getic alliance with its parent company in South Africa
and 16 other businesses in the region to interact and
fill in supply gaps where required. The central posi-
tion of the company in Zambia makes it a natural hub
for business development in sub-Sahara Africa and
central Africa as a whole.
