REGION OF GRAN POTENTIAL

GEOGRAPHICAL DATA

LOCATION

The state of Tachira is located in the south west of the country next to the frontier with Columbia. Bordering states are Zulia in the north, and Merida and Barinas to its east. Its total area amounts to 11 100 sq. km.

HYDROGRAPHY

The hydrographical network of the state of Tachira flows into two bodies of water: The Maracaibo Lake and the Atlantic Ocean, through The Orinoco River. The watershed of Maracaibo Lake brings out the Tachira River and La Grita River in the lower lands north of the state, there are also water reservoirs stored by the periods of rain, copious rivers, streams and streamlets that descend the Orinoco.

CLIMATE

Tachira has a mountain and savanna climate, surrounded by different thermal floors that identify it as a warm tropical zone.

PRODUCTION ASPECTS

The State of Tachira has natural potentials as well as industrial resources, joined by the work and capital. It places the state as a sturdy unit in the development of the three productive sectors:

PRIMARY SECTOR

Is known for having a great potential in the agricultural production, with a special interest in investments in the industrial and mining sector, these contributions will help in the development of the region.

The agricultural sector is made up of important rubrics such as vegetables, fruits, tubercles, coffee, cacao and cattle.

The mining sector also represents a great indicator since there is a grand diversity of companies that exploit and take advantage of this resource. Among its mineral resources there is carbon, phosphate, lime stone, plaster, copper, clayey.

SECONDARY SECTOR

This sector counts on the necessary favorable conditions to develop the industrial and agro-industrial sectors, made up of more than 1,200 industries of top lines of business in the manufacturing of textile, footwear, leather, Moroccan leather, and others. It also counts on a lacteous complex, a central sugar producer, food products and several centrals in benefit of coffee production.

THIRD SECTOR

It is made up of tourism, which has a registered tourist infrastructure, divide in more than 3,500 restaurants, more than 20 hotels, and more than 30 lodging houses named "posadas", it also counts on a diversity of service companies. Commerce is composed of more than 15, 000 commercial establishments.

TACHIRA: EXPORTABLE SUPPLY

The State of Tachira presents a formidable exportable supply. In some rubrics exporting is already a success. The region shows a favorable geo political and geo economical strategic condition. The diversity of its potentials, the known labor of its human resource, the multiplicity of different academic formation and an enormous dynamic and economic frontier, are some of the factors that prove its comparative and competitive advantages.

Because of its condition as a frontier state, its magnificent potential of physical and human resources, its strategic geographical position, the Tachira is called upon to join the global market, placing its products and creating favorable conditions to attract investment and strengthen it potentials.

The Tachira is a land of great historical abundances, natural, economical, political, and social that are incomparable. Here thanks to its varied climate, it enviable geo political position and its valuable human resource, makes it one of the states in Venezuela with the largest projection in its different contours.

Its incomparable riches and natural beauties ( 4 National Parks and a breathtaking scenery) its broad network of Universities and University institutions (largest in the country), an organized solid structure, a great financial, commercial, and industrial platform. And abundant non- metallic mineral resources, complement the main greatness of this region.

In addition to the factors already mentioned, this region disposes of a system of public roads and the communications that facilitate the flow of the productive factors of goods and services. A qualified labor is available as well as an excellent climate, features that allow the practice of political incentives and aide in the establishment of industries.

The Tachira is oriented towards a promising future; in fact, its people and government authorities have their efforts and will concentrated in placing Tachira as one of the Venezuelan states with best perspectives in developing in the short and long run.

    Among the main sectors that count on projects about to take off for the year 2001 are: Environment, Industry and Commerce, Mine, Transportation, Tourism, and roads systems.

  • A complete plan of the organization and management of the International basin of the Tachira river

  • Complete project of the recuperation of the basins and the residual cleaning of t the city of San Cristobal


  • Recuperation of the hydrographic river basins of La Bermeja - La Potrera - La Parada, all belonging in San Cristóbal.

  • International freight center in the frontier point San Antonio - Ureña

  • Exploration y carbon deposits of Santo Domingo


  • Exploration of the phosphate deposits
