SPORTS AND NATURE

Hiking and trekking

The southern extension of the Swiss Alps has shaped this little land and local ancient cultures and traditions have evolved from these magnificent highlands. The mountains are wild, beautiful and the most peaceful place to enjoy a challenge or to just feel again the essence of being. Bosnia and Herzegovina is the home of dozens of peaks over 2,000 meters and many more over the 1,500 meter mark - no less than a natural phenomena for a country half the size of Portugal. Young or old, fit or not, there is a safe mountain here waiting to be claimed!

Alpine and rock climbing

Engulfed in such a mountainous terrain it is surprising that climbing is not THE national sport. Bosnia and Herzegovina hosts the highest rock face on the Balkan Peninsula: the Veliki Kuk (over 1,000 meters) of pure hard-core rock. Few have made it, but it has been done. On a more realistic scale Bosnia and Herzegovina is dotted with ideal faces for beginners, novices, or pro-climbers. Most of the towns have outdoor climbing "gyms" and there are several organizations and tour operators that organize climbing excursions throughout the whole country. This country is a virgin land for those searching an intense, extreme climbing experience.

Olympic style skiing

From December to the end of March, BiH's mountains are in full swing with some of the finest quality skiing in Europe. The Jahorina Olympic Ski Center and the Bjelasnica Olympic Ski Center - both close to Sarajevo- hosted the 1984 XIV Winter Olympic Games and are now ready to host tourists for affordable, unforgettable and challenging ski holidays. For the most experienced skiers you, there is the phenomenal skiing tour trough the Dinaric Alps, a fantastic ski experience trough some of the wildest terrains of the Balkans.

This paradise and protected area has a long tradition of extreme water sporting and easy family outings.

The lower Neretva is an ideal vacation destination with its beautiful lakes lined with beaches, holiday homes, and nature motels for swimming, boat rides, water skiing, fishing, or just a peaceful day in the sun. Rafting trips on Neretva are offered by several professional rafting operators-most of which are based in the northern Herzegovinian town of Konjic.

Extreme sports: paragliding, mountain biking, kayaking

In a land where nature reigns… extreme is not an exception but rather the rule: paraglide off the Visocica Peak and over the Rakitnica canyon ; kayak down the raging Tara river ; mountain bike across the highlands plateau of Prenj, the Bosnian Himalayas. Few people have yet come here and fewer have conquered the extreme wilderness that governs so… this extreme challenge only waits for you!
