|
The insurance company Generali Pojitovna a.s.
Praha is a member of the international insurance
group GENERALI (established 1831 as Assicurazioni
Generali in Triest, Italy), which ranks among the
first hundred largest companies in the world and
comprises more than 93 insurance companies, 35 financial
and holding companies, 22 real estate offices and
3 agricultural enterprises in about 50 countries
all over the world. Generali Holding Vienna AG (with
headquarters in Vienna) operates in Central Europe
and is closely bound with its founder Assicurazioni
Generali.
HISTORY |
At the beginning of the 19th century Trieste was
the natural outlet to the sea for the international
trade of the Austro-Hungarian empire, of which it
was part. Thanks to the free port status improved
by Empress Maria Theresia, the city experienced
a period of great prosperity.
Against this dynamic background the need was felt
for the creation of an insurance company with the
necessary technical and financial structures to
operate in all fields of the business. Hence Assicurazioni
Generali was established on 26 December 1831, thanks
to the entrepreneurial spirit of some local businessmen.
The Company's initial capital was two million florins,
which was quite a large sum for those days and was
in itself indicative of its ambitious programmes.
A few months after its foundation, Generali began
to expand within the Hapsburg Empire (Vienna, Budapest,
Prague). The opening of offices in the principal
countries of Europe (France, Germany, Switzerland)
was the following step in the Company's growth.
Generali then expanded into the Balkans and Eastern
Europe, from Warsaw to St. Petersburg, and within
a few decades had also reached Africa, Asia and
North and South America.
At the end of the First World War, Trieste, following
the dissolution of the empire, became part of Italy
and lost its important function as the port for
an extensive hinterland. Nonetheless Generali went
ahead with a massive programme to expand its organization
and Group structure, setting up companies in Italy
and elsewhere and acquiring significant stakes in
existing insurance companies.
The exclusion from the Eastern European markets
in the second post-war period meant that the Company
lost 14 insurance companies and its considerable
property. The new situation extensively changed
the map of the Generali Group territories but without
in the least scathing its traditional world-wide
presence.
The Company concentrated its efforts on rebuilding
what was left of its international network and developing
important markets outside Europe (Latin America,
Asia and Africa). More recently the process of growth
has been followed by a rationalization which led
to the transformation of certain branches abroad
into locally-based companies.
Generali successfully operated in the territory
of the contemporary Czech Republic from 1832 till
1948. It lost all branch offices in Eastern Europe
after World War II. It has repeatedly fenced its
expansion into some of them at the beginning of
the 90ties.

In 1993, the Headquarters of EA-GENERALI for the
Czech Republic was founded in Prague and later transformed
into the joint-stock company Generali Pojitovna
a.s. in January 1995. Capital stock of the company
is 410 millions Kc. Generali Pojitovna a.s.
with seat in Prague has its branch offices in 50
localities of the Czech Republic and it plans to
spread further into other towns. |
