A- GOING AROUND GHANA

Arrival and visa formalities

The Ghana Embassies abroad issue visas for 30 days and also multiple re-entry visas. If visits to neighbouring countries are planned, it is better to get the re-entry visas before departing to Ghana. All immigrations/visa forms require 4 passport photographs

Driving Licence

A foreign licence may be used for a period of three months, after this period a Ghanaian licence must be obtained which has to be renewed every two years. On request, an international driving licence can be obtained which is valid for one year only.

C- AIRPORT TAX

The airport tax is US$20, which is usually included in your ticket. If not, the amount has to be paid before departure.

D- PICTURES 

Taking photographs at the airport and harbours, the Christianborg Castle and around Government building, even if they are of historical interest, is prohibited.

Some Ghanaians are also very sensitive about this and it is advisable to ask permission before taking pictures of individuals.

E- MEDICAL INFORMATION

 If possible, bring your medial supplies with you, as there are shortages of certain kinds of medications. Malaria prophylaxis is absolutely essential. Both standing and free flowing water may carry various diseases in Ghana.

Certain fresh water snails, commonly found in rivers, carry bilharzia parasites.

Guinea Worms are more usually found in standing water. River blindness is more common in swift-flowing streams in the Northern Region. It is advisable to avoid bathing in rivers and lakes. It is also not advisable to drink water that has not been boiled and/or filtered.
 
A valid vaccination card must be carried when entering or leaving Ghana. Only yellow fever vaccination is obligatory.

F- ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES

Tension 240 volts 50 Hz Television/video equipment uses the same system as Central Europe.

G- CURRENCY REGULATIONS

There is no restriction on foreign money that may be taken into Ghana. Foreign currency brought into Ghana may be exchanged into cedis (the national currency), at any local authorized bank or Forex bureau. Currency can be exchanged in Accra and the larger regional centres. Foreign currency can be imported through the banking system by telegraphic and mail transfer, cheques, drafts etc. Traveller's cheques have a lower rate of exchange. Rates are quoted daily and they vary from dealer to dealer. It is advisable to shop around to find the best rate in the Bureau. Credit cards are accepted in a few places such as hotels and some supermarkets.

H- WEATHER CONDITIONS

Due to the high humidity and high temperatures, it is advisable to wear good quality cotton clothes, which can actually be purchased in Ghana. It can be very uncomfortable in either restrictive or artificial-fibre clothes. Also due to the range of temperatures, to carry a few cotton knits or light jackets is advisable as the evenings can be rather cool at times. Temperatures may also fall during the rainy season.
