The Ghana Stock Exchange, was given recognition under the Stock Exchange Act of 1971 (Act 384) in October 1990, and trading began in November 1990.
Currently the Ghana Stock Exchange is rated one of the best stock exchanges in Sub-Saharan Africa.

| Regulations affecting foreign and non-resident investors:
Exchange Control permission has been given to non-resident Ghanaians and foreigners to invest through the Exchange without any prior approval. An external resident portfolio investor (whether individual or institutional) can hold only up to 10% of any security approved for listing on the Exchange. The total holdings of all external residents in one listed security shall not exceed 74%. Ghanaians resident abroad and foreigners resident in Ghana may invest without any limit. There is free and full foreign exchange remittance for the original capital plus all capital gains, returns and related earnings. There is a 10% tax on dividend income for both resident and non-resident investors.

Investor protection details: The Exchange has various regulations that have been designed to protect the investor. These include:
* Membership regulations, which stipulate criteria
for membership of the Exchange, regulations to be
abided by the licensed dealing members in their
operations, code of conduct or ethics for members,
etc.;
* Listing regulations, which prescribe among others,
criteria for listing securities, application procedures,
contents of application and prospectus, and continued
obligations of the listed companies.
| SECURITIES REGULATORY COMMISSION |
The Securities Regulatory Commission (SRC), established under PNDC Law 333 of 1993, was formally inaugurated in September 1998 and commenced operations in early 1999.
The SRC as the regulator of the securities market and industry in Ghana has among its functions the following:
· Maintaining surveillance over the activities in securities to ensure fair and equitable dealings.
· Formulating of principles for the guidance of the industry.
· Registering, licensing, authorising or regulating, in accordance with the law (PNDCL 333) or any regulations made under its stock exchanges, investment advisers, unit trust schemes, mutual funds, securities dealers, and their agents and controlling and supervising their activities with a view of maintaining proper standards of conduct and acceptable practices in the securities business.
· Reviewing, approving and regulating take-overs, mergers and acquisitions and all forms of business combinations in accordance with any law or code of practice requiring it to do so.
