The richest bauxite deposits in the world
|
In the hearts of the Boké hills lie the
richest bauxite deposits ever known in the world,
with an average aluminia content varying from
50 % to 62 %.
Since 1963 CBG holds exclusive rights to exploit
bauxite of Sangarédi, Bidikoum and Silidara
on the site of a mining concession of 1, 292 Km
2 .
More than one sixth of aluminia produced in the
world comes from CBG bauxite.
Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée ( CBG
) was founded in 1963, when a consortium of partners,
Halco ( Mining ) Inc., associated with the Guinean
government to form an independent corporation.
The pro rata share is 49 % for the Republic of
Guinea and 51% for Halco. Preliminary works for
the exploitation of the site took several years
owing to the geographic specifities of the region
. It was on the 26 July 1973 that the vessel "CORONA"
anchrored at the port of Kamsar to take delivery
of the first bauxite load . Ever since, CBG has
been operating according to the following principle
: Halco partners buy essentially the production
as part of "Take-and-pay" contracts
; prices are set on the basis of aluminia and
aluminium quotation on the international market.

Some record results |
A railroad to transport raw bauxite to the plant
and an efficient work force are among the favorable
factors sustaining the operations. To assess the
real performance of the corporation, one only
needs to look at the volume of bauxite production
which increased from 6 million tons in 1973 to
12,5 million tons in 1998.
Records have been broken as regards to occupational
health and safety, mine production, rail haulage
and shipments at the port of Kamsar.
Furthermore, CBG's sound financial health enables
it to contribute to the development of its nearby
environment .
In this context, CBG earmarks annually a financial
package of 500 thousand USD through a community
program focused on education, health cares, road
buildings, sports and leisure.
A promising outlook |
The future of Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée
is promising particularly if it could lead to
on-site refiling of bauxite into aluminia.
The development will allow the country to become
an important player in the market.
