THE HADDAD GROUP OF COMPANIES

The Haddad group of Companies is a multi-conglomerate of thriving business establishments headquartered in and around Monrovia, managed by the Haddad family and a mixture of professional Liberians. The birth of this conglomerate dates as far back as the 1950's when the patriarch of the group, Mr. Elie Haddad, a Lebanese merchant, through hard work and consistency opened up his first store on United Nations Drive near BTC and the second, down Waterside near the bridge with both stores being close to bridges, thus the name Bridgeway emerged. His brother was then actively engaged in the lucrative coffee and cocoa trade in Karnplay, Nimba County.
The finance to commence his (Mr. Elie Haddad, Chairman of the group), own business came principally from the savings he made while he was an employee of Rasammy Brothers. He used this savings to open his own little rice and general merchandise store, coupled with his bold venture to mortgage his property during the real estate bomb in Lebanon in the 60's has caused the group to grow over the years into one of the largest corporate holdings in Liberia that includes the below listed companies.

Bridgeway Corporation (BWC), importers of 110 lines of commodities and the Mother company.

The Alliance Motor Corporation (AMC), a vehicle company involved in the dealership/distributorship of Mercedes Benz, Volkswagen and Audi vehicles.

The Liberia Group of Industries (LGI), established in 1984 to bring home another family member, Mr. Ahed Haddad, a chemical engineer, from the United States, is the only manufacturer of packaged fruit drink in the country. LGI is the producer of the famous Sun Top and Disco Drinks. The market for this fruit drink was very good during the pre-war years as the product was sold both on the local market and to neighboring countries. But since the war, we have only been able to sell to the local market and even at that, the purchasing power of the people is very low thus showing a decrease in sales.

Prestige Motor Corporation (PMC), established as a result of legal implication from principle and to incorporate an additional family member, Mr. Elie Haddad Jr., as head of another vehicle company involved in the dealership/distributorship of Land Rovers, BMW and Mitsubishi vehicles.

Worldwide Impex (WWI), established in 1995 is involved in the purchasing, processing and exporting of cocoa and coffee. The involvement of the Haddad Group in this area of business came as a result of its financial support to the Liberia Produce Marketing Corporation to help purchase produce from the local farmers. Through this involvement, it was realized that the buying, processing and exporting of cocoa and coffee was worth going into as a line of business. Currently, the market is very tight couple with the low prices on the world market. The bad road condition is also affecting the purchase of coffee especially (as coffee farms are very far in the interior) as opposed to cocoa farms that are not very far from major cities.

Though this group has carved for itself a very enviable record in the Liberian economy, the Haddad group is never content to rest on its laurels of super achievements. Staffed with the best professionals always eager to develop their skills, the Haddad group is tirelessly working to sustain its position among the top businesses in the Liberian economy.

Mr. George E. Haddad, Managing Director of the Haddad Group of Companies sums up the reason behind the success of the Haddad group as its firm reliance on professionalism. Mr. Haddad is very meticulous about whom he hires. There is no superficiality here, no employment on who-knows-you basis. The company hires only the best professionals, whether it's a mechanic, an accountant, a public affairs personnel or a manager. Moreover, from the mechanic upward, every employee must at least be a high school graduate. As a typical example, working in a modern garage (as one of theirs) is no longer about grease and spanners alone. Every mechanic that is hired must go through a vigorous computer training to cope with the technological advancements. And this involves a high level of literacy. All employees of the Group must be prepared to learn, since the Group must keep above the competition; and Mr. George E. Haddad, who is a very good manager of men, money and materials, trains his managers to mix these three managerial components perfectly.

The Group is now gearing-up to pump more lifeblood into the Liberian economy by diversification. In the not too distant future, they will be branching off into rice farming- (as studies are underway). The success story of the Haddad Group is one that could stimulate more investors who are still hesitant about venturing into Liberia. The Haddad formula could serve as an investment bible to lure entrepreneurs into a country where the man on the street still believes that finding a true partner in progress is like looking for a needle in a haystack.
