  • The opposition-headed by Vicente Fox of the National Action Party-won the presidency for the first time in 71 years. The losing party-the Institutional Revolutionary Party-had been the longest-ruling party on the planet.

  • The biggest Pyramid in the world is not in Egypt. It's actually about sixty miles southeast of Mexico City. It covers more than forty acres and the largest Egyptian Pyramid, The Great Pyramid at Giza, covers about 13 acres.
  • Mexico is the only country in the world, where the traditional Beetle continues to be manufactured, with 1,500,000 units been produced to date.

  • The largest taxi fleet in the world is found in Mexico City. The city boasts a fleet of over 60,000 taxis.

  • Mexico is one of the planet's most biologically diverse nations. It has 1,041 bird species, 439 mammals, 989 amphibians and reptiles, and about 26,000 plants-about 10 percent of the world's total on just 1.4 percent of the world's land.

  • By 1519, the Aztec city of Tenochtitlán-the site on which Mexico City currently rests-had more than 200,000 inhabitants, and more than a million people lived throughout the Valley of Mexico. The Aztec Empire fell to the Spanish between the years of 1519 and 1521.

  • Mexico gained its independence from Spain Sept. 16, 1810
