Strategy

NATURAL GAS IN ROMANIA

An organized activity of natural gas industry in Romania has arisen since the beginning of the present century when based upon the first discoveries commercial reserves have been put in production and commercial gas supplies were delivered to household and industrial purpose (for lighting, heating, cooking, as well as methanol, sodium carbonate and carbon black manufacturing).

Romania has been noted in 1912-1913 as the first area in Europe with natural gas consumption.

The development of a large scale geological research and investigation activity after 1960 has led to the discovering and evaluation of gas reserves which further on allowed in the mid ‘80s to reach the highest level of natural gas domestic production. Beginning with 1979, natural gas has been imported from the Soviet Union. The amount of imported gas has increased until 1990 and an annual gas consumption of 40 Bcm was reached.

Within the primary energetic sources of Romania, the domestic natural gas share is about 40% and from the economical, social and environmental points of view this represents an important average.

As a consequence of natural gas use expansion in Romania, a large production, transmission and distribution infrastructure has been developed.

HISTORY, ACTIVITIES, ORGANIZATION

In 1992 , while searching for potassium salts, natural gas has been discovered in the well 2 Sarmasel , at a depth of 302 m.

Four years later, in 1913, the first natural gas production was achieved, amounting to 113,000 cm, and in 1917 the first gas pipeline was put into operation, having a diameter of 10 in and a length of 50 km, running from Sarmasel to Turda. This fact allowed in 1918, for the first time in Europe, public illumination with gas lamp of the town Turda.
After discovering this underground wealth, an intensive activity has begun, and teams of geologists, drillers and other specialists have discovered until now over 150 gas bearing structures.

The Romanian gas industry is vertically integrated. ROMGAZ is the country’s producer, transporter and distributor of natural gas. Within the ROMGAZ system, delivery is being performed from the production companies via the transmission company and one of its distribution companies. The gas amounts produced by PETROM and the imported gas is also delivered through the ROMGAZ system.

Service functions, such as the manufacturing of gas meters and the construction of pipelines and compressor stations, have been separated from ROMGAZ’s main business centers and established as commercial companies.

ROMGAZ provides transmission and distribution services for a fee, dependent on distance and on the transported quantities.

The organizational structure of the Romanian gas industry has been improved simultaneously with its development; its last structure has been adopted in 1991 with the establishment of the Romanian National Gas Corporation ROMGAZ-R.A. It employs over 20,000 people and is in charge of natural gas exploration, production, transmission, distribution and use in Romania, as well as the import and international gas transit.

ROMGAZ-R.A. Medias is a company with integral state capital, managed by an Administration Board and includes in its structure:

7 divisions: Research, Development and Cooperation, Production, Transmission and Distribution, National Dispatch, Mechanic and Energetic, Financial and Accountancy, Management;

8 territorial subsidiaries: 2 for drilling, 3 for production, 1 for gas transmission, 2 for distribution;

1 Research and Technical Engineering Center;

The National Gas School.
