    HISTORY

    At the beginning of the 20th century we were the main way for the modernization of Romania, at the beginning of the 21st century we shall be the main way for the European integration of Romania.

    Romanian people have always been at the crossroads and in a timely moment of choice. On the start of the third millenium maybe more than ever, we have to decide for the future. The railway has always been the way of progress and modernization. For the Romanian people the railway has represented safety, optimism and trust.

    The first countries to build railway lines were:

  • France and United States of America in 1830

  • Russia in 1832

  • Belgium and Prussia in 1835

  • Romania in 1854.

  • The first railway route in Romania was 52 km long and assured the connection between Oravita and Bazias. It was the starting point for the network covering the whole country.

    More than 35% of Romanian railway traffic is electrified. The first electrified route - Brasov/Predeal was put into operation in 1965.

    The length of the railway exploitation network in Romania is 11,180 km, covering the whole territory of the country and having a density of 48 km railway on 1000 square km.

    There are 1,030 railway stations and 21 marshalling yards of which 8 main marshalling yards on the Romanian territory.
    DINAMIC FUTURE

    We shall mainly try to improve the quality of the railway infrastructure on the pan-European corridors (corridors IV and IX).

    This will involve

  • increasing of the operation speed up to 160 km/h;

  • improvement of safety in operation, using modern signaling equipment.

  • Once these improvements are carried out, an efficient interoperability with the other railway systems will be possible.

    In order to answer to the demands of modern people, our customers, who are always on the move engaged in the race for the third millenium, CFR will improve the quality of offered railway station services, by:
