DID YOU KNOW?

  • Official Country Name of Slovakia is Slovenska Republika (The Slovak Republic). The full and official designation for Slovakia is the Slovak Republic and hence both terms refer to the same nation-state. Other names in other languages are: Slovensko (Slovak, Czech), Slovakia (English), Slovaquie (French), Slowakei (German), Slovacchia (Italian), Eslovaquia (Spanish)

  • "The only thing I know about Slovakia is what I learned first-hand from your foreign minister, who came to Texas." The former governor and present American President George W. Bush said this, replying to a Slovak journalist. Bush met the leader of Slovenia, not Slovakia. Slovenia and Slavonia, unlike Slovakia, are part of the Balkans and have experienced violence and atrocities related to the recent wars in this region.
  • Martina Hingis, the famous tennis player, was born in Kosice in Eastern Slovakia.

  • Andy Warhol, the painter, had Slovak origins.

  • In the 1990 census, more than 2 million Americans and Canadians claimed Slovak descent.

  • A traditional Slovak habit is to welcome guests with bread and salt.

  • You will not find any armed conflict in Slovakia. Slovakia is not part of, nor does it border on, any region which has seen any large-scale hostilities, and in fact even individual Slovaks tend to be rather peaceful by temperament.
