PROFILE

The Banque Internationale pour l'Afrique de l'Ouest, Côte d'Ivoire subsidiary, BIAO-CI inherited the oldest bank in West Africa, the Banque of Sénégal. It was founded in Saint-Louis, Sénégal by Imperial decree of 23 December 1853 thus conferring on it the added privilege of issuing currency in Sénégal.

Its ancestry dates back to prestigious banks which contributed immensely to Africa's development.

In 1901, the Banque de Sénégal became the banque de l'Afrique Occidentale(BAO) [Bank of West Africa]. The first branch of BAO in Côte d'Ivoire was established in 1906 in Grand Bassam followed by the opening of a cash point in Grand-Lahou in 1908 and the Assinie branch was opened in 1919. In 1934, BAO transferred its Côte d'Ivoire branch from Grand Bassam to Abidjan.

In 1965, BAO opened its capital to American investors thus confirming its international dimension. Then, a bank with a bigger structure was established, that is, the Banque Internationale pour l'Afrique de l'Ouest(BIAO)[International Bank of West Africa].

BIAO's Côte d'Ivoire branch became a subsidiary on 30 December 1980.

In 1986, BIAO-Côte d'Ivoire embarked on the development of Leasing activities and established AFRIBAIL which remains a subsidiary of BIAO-Côte d'Ivoire. This company has a good reputation due to its outstanding competence in the area of leasing, that is, its area of specialty.
