Petrobras began operating in Angola in 1979. The
company currently has participation in 6 blocks and
operates in three of them.
The evolution of Petrobras in Angola can be divided
in two phases. Until 2006, the company was operat-
ing only in two blocks:
Block 2/85 in the Lower Congo Basin in shallow water
(to 50 m deep) off the Angolan coast since 1980
Block 34 where it has 15% share is still in explora-
tion process. The block covers an area of 5,930
km2 and is situated in deepwater and ultra-deep-
water between 1,500 and 2,500 m.
After December 2006, Petrobras is granted 4 addi-
tional blocks, operating in 3 of them (Blocks 6/06,
18/06 and 26) and partnering on Block 15/06. The
end of 2009 is marked by the discovery of oil in Man-
ganês-01, 200 km de Luanda on Block 18/06. The
company will focus on Pre-Sal project in the South
of Angola and Block 18-06 despite few discoveries
showed positive results.
Petrobras is a long-standing partner of the Angolan
government and population, operating with social
responsibility in humanitarian and social work and
in professional and management training of skilled
labor for the country’s oil industry, such as its Pro-
quadros program.
It has also implemented a program of humanitarian
work that includes a number of communities. The
beneficiaries are schools, day care centers, hospi-
tals and rural communities. Its contribution also ex-
tends to supporting Angolan socio-cultural entities,
such as the National Historic Archives, Agostinho
Neto University and the Alpha–Omega dance group.
