Huambo city was founded on the 8th August 1912
under the name of Nova-Lisboa. It almost became
the capital considering its strategic position, its enor-
mous potential for agriculture and a solid hydraulic
network.
The city is marked with a typical colonial structure
and wide avenues.
NATURE AND WILDLIFE
Main attraction of Huambo, Morro do Mocco is the
highest point of Angola with an altitude of 2,620 m.
Located in Ekunha, it is 42 km southwest of Huambo.
Ilha dos Amores is another site with fantastic scen-
ery that can be found in Ecunha.
Closed to Bié, the luxurious Reserva Florestal do
Kavongue occupies an area of 39 km2.
The cleanliness of the area of Alto Hama mountain
and the medical virtues of its spa waters are reputed.
The rivers Keve, Cunene, Caalai, Capanda, Anhara
and Cinquenta have important resources in fish (tila-
pia, catfish, eel,…).
The lagoon of Kuando is located 20 km far from
Huambo and offers good conditions for swimming,
fishing and navigation.
90km west of Huambo, the rough waters of Mupas
do Cuiva cataracts are suitable for canoeing.
For those who like walking and trekking, they can

practice and admire the beauty of Morro de Bangue-
la, Morro de Kachuingo and Morro de San António.
Other sites of interest include Pedras Ganda-Kawe,
Pedra Kambundu and Pedra Caça-Yombua.
CULTURE
Museu Antropológico Municipal do Huambo has a
collection of pictures, sculptures and paintings of the
province.
Museu Regional do Huambo aims to collect ethno-
graphic elements of the province and the central pla-
teau regions of Bié and Cuando Cubango. It has a
wide collection of 3000 sacred handcraft, engravings
and paintings.
The tomb of King Ekuikui is located on the Mount
São António in Bailundo.
The ruins of Embala Grande are only 20 km far from
Huambo. They used to be occupied by Soba tribe
Chief Candumbo. Very peculiar site with under-
ground caves and defensive walls.
Other cultural attractions include Cidadela da Quis-
sala and Paços de Concelho (Biblioteca Constantino
Kamoli).
