The whole month of August is dedicated to the fes-
tivities of Nossa Senhora do Monte.
The region is famous for its spectular scenery.
Lubango appears to be relatively unaffected by the
40-year conflict that ravaged many other communi-
ties in Angola. The city has maintained most of its
old-world charm.
The dominant ethnic group is Nyaneka-Nkumbe and
Umbundo is the most spoken language.
The first contacts with Europeans were occured in
1627. Formerly known as Sá da Bandeira during
the Portuguese colonial period, Lubango was first
settled when fertile land attracted dozens of Boer
families (the Dorslandtrekkers) from Transvaal in the
early 1880s in current Humpata.
In 1882 a thousand settlers came from Portuguese
island of Madeira and successfully developed farm-
ing, essentially sweet potato.
Huíla province was founded on the 2nd December
1901, it resulted from the division of the province of
Moçâmedes.
There are small airports in Jamba, Caluquembe and
Matala. The most important one is at Mucanca. The
province is also accessible by road from Namibe,
Benguela and Cunene provinces.
