The province was formed in 1769 by Dom Francisco
Inocêncio de Sousa Coutinho. Main ethnic groups
are Kibalas, N’goias, Musseles, Mussumbas and
Bailundos.
The province lives mainly on agriculture, cattle-
breeding and fishing (crustaceans). Sumbe is half
way from Luanda to Benguela, it can be a sympathic
stop-over.
The Sumbe, Porto-Amboim and Waku-Congo air-
ports can accomodate small and medium aircrafts.
