Fortaleza de Kibala
in Lobolo dis-
trict,
Muralha do Kariango
and

are located
170 km from Sumbe in Kibala district. Other similar
sites can be found in
Quingunba and Kinjinge.
NATURE AND WILDLIFE
The
Tocota waterfalls
are the highest in the prov-
ince (150 m). Other
waterfalls in Binga
, 53 km
south of Porto Amboim, on the Sumbe-Gabela road,
are also worth a look as they are inhabited by a wide
variety of birds in a luxurious vegetation setting. The
Quedas de Água das Cachoeiras
is another popu-
lar spot.
The
Kumbira forest
is a great spot for bird watching
The
Caves of Sumbe
have a unique structure of
limestone stalactites and stalagmites.
The famous healing
waters of Waku-Congo (Pedra
d’Agua)
are located in Seles district.
Cambongo, Cubal, Keve and Longa rivers

LUANDA CAPITAL
Portuguese explorer Paulo Dias de Novais de-
barqued on Ilha do Cabo and founded Luanda on
25th January 1575 as “São Paulo de Loanda”. He
brought about 700 people of which 350 were men
of arms, priests, merchants and servants. The first
Portuguese settlement was established.
One year later, realising that the capital should be
placed on mainland, he re-established in the village
of São Paulo, marked with the construction of a
church dedicated to São Sebastian, near the current
Armed Forces Museum. Thirty years later, with the
increase of the European population and the growth
of the construction, the village of S. Paulo de Loanda
took on the role of city, with the township of S. Miguel
extending to the plaza facing Maria Pia hospital (cur-
rent Josina Machiel).
The Axiluanda (men of the sea) developed their own
culture, while remaining part of the Ambundu ethnic
group and carried on cultural traditions of great im-
portance such as traditional carnaval, dances and
celebrations. Among the typical dress of fisherman,
the grocer and the bessangana stand out. By dedi-
cating customary rites and a culte to the goddess of
the sea Kianda, they favoured carnival dances such
as samba, rebita and kazucuta.
