NATURE AND WILDLIFE
Baía dos Tigres
is the largest island of Angola with
an area of 98 km². The island is approximately 30
kilometres long and can only be reached by boat.
It is an amazing area, where huge sand dunes fall
precipitously into the sea and where there are vast
shallow lagoons that abound with bird and other ma-
rine life.
Two surveys conducted on 1999 and 2001 confirms
Baía dos Tigres has a rich wetland bird diversity con-
sisting of 25 species, with a total of 11 000 birds.
WHERE TO EAT
WHAT TO SEE
The place is also frequented by experienced fisher-
men. Some species can weight over 200kg, includ-
ing sharks and rays!!
The nearest settlement to Baia dos Tigres is Foz do
Cunene, a large perennial river that forms part of a
boundary between Namibia and Angola. The lush
vegetation that surrounds Foz do Cunene provides
a delightful contrast with the desert. Don’t miss the
opportunity to go there, you are very likely to see
phoques, sea lions and coyotes and marine turtles.
Fishing at Foz do Cunene is also very popular and
worth the long drive through the desert of Namibe
and
Parque Nacional do Iona
, the biggest national
park in the province with a superficie of 15,150 km2.
Iona was proclaimed a national park in 1937 and
forms a continuous block of protected area involving
1,200km of coastline and sand dunes.
Altitude ranges from sea-level to about 800m at
Posto do Iona and higher in the Tchamalinde moun-
tain. The protected area includes the mouth of the
Cunene River, the Baia dos Tigres and about 200 km
of Atlantic coastline.
Unfortunately civil war and lack of infrastructure
have caused heavy damages to Iona. Nevertheless,
huge efforts are underway to replace most of the lost
wildlife. The “Big Five” of Iona National Park now in-
clude: Springbok (Gazelle), Kudu, Ostrich, Oryx and
(very rare) cheetah.
The inland route provides superb wildlife and birdlife,
alternating plains littered with
Welwitchias
, fascinat-
ing rock formations and the banks of a freshwater
oasis.
If you have a chance,
Oásis do Arco
is a place to be
explored. The beautiful inland lake Arco is a hidden
treasure located within a canyon. Around the oasis,
amazing sandstone rock formations form the back-
drop for lush aquatic vegetation, water lilies and a
diversity of birds. There, the local Kimbundu people
live in huts can be seen fishing and planting sugar-
cane crops.
There are a variety of lagoons that can be visited,
namely
Lagoa de Águas, Lagoa de Mate and
Lagoa do Inamangando.
The
Reserva Especial do Namibe
has an area
of 4,450 km2 and operates since 1957. There you
might see ostrich, rhinoceros, zebra, lions, suricata
and more.
