Inside the
Parque Nacional do Iona, the Furnas
do Kapangumbe
consist on a series of caves. They
are located in the Salojamba zone, close to Porto do
Namibe. Bushmen used to live on those hills before
they migrated to the center of the province.
The fanatics of religious architecture will prefer the
visit of
Igreja de São Adrião, Nossa Senhora de
Fátima,
Capela da Praia Amélia, Capela da Quiploa
and Igreja da Nossa Senhora do Mundo in Bibala.
Colonial buildings of interest include
Edifício dos
Correios e Telégrafos, Tribunal da Comarca do
Namibe, Palácio do Governo
and
the Moçâmedes
train station.
Other attractions worth to be mentioned are the
Prisão de Bentiaba, Morro da Torre
and the
for-
tresses of São Fernando and Capagombe.

Local festivities run from the 1st to the 7th of July.
Before the Conference of Berlin, the current province
of Uíge was part of the Kingdom of Congo that also
included parts of the two current DRC and Republic
of Congo.
The province is a tradional farming area with great
plantations of coffee. During the colonial time, Uíge
contributed greatly to the development of Angola.
Typical local specialty is
muambas nthsombe
(grilled and cooked larvas) and cacatos, served with
funge and vegetables. If thirsty, try the local
malavo
(or marufo) extratect from bordão tree.
Uíge is accessible by road from Luanda driving
through Bengo province and frequent flights oper-
ate from Luanda. There is an alternative airport in
Negage.
