Map of Total’s concessions in Angola
In 2009, Total’s operated production in Angola was
491,000 barrels oil equivalent per day (boe/d). This
production comes from operated Blocks 17 and 3, and
Total also gets part of its equities from the Blocks 0 and
14 operated by Chevron. From 2007 to 2010, several
discoveries were made, notably on Blocks 32, 17/06
and 33 operated by Total.
While Block 17 is nowTotal’s main asset inAngola, Total
has operated during 25 years the prolific Block 3 before
transferring progressively its operatorship to Sonangol
P&P. The last asset, Oombo, will be transferred in 2012.
The Group also operates the ultra-deep offshore
Block 32, in which it holds a 30% stake. Thirteen
discoveries have confirmed the block’s potential and
conceptual development studies are underway for a
first project in the central south-eastern part of the
block (Kaombo), with a First Oil expected in 2016.
Further developments are foreseen in the northern
part of the block.
Total E&P Angola operates Block 17, with a 40% in-
terest, alongside Statoil (23.33%), Esso Exploration
Angola (Block 17) Limited (20%) and BP Exploration
(Angola) Ltd. (16.67%).
Block 17 is ruled by a Production Sharing Contract
with equitable clauses, which allows costs recovery
during the first years of production and a share of
production in favour of Concessionaire and State
once most of the costs have been recovered.
This block is one of the world’s most prolific blocks
and includes some of the most ambitious develop-
ments ever undertaken in the deep offshore with wa-
ter depths averaging 1500 meters.
• Girassol, discovered in 1996 in Block 17, was de-
veloped with an innovative subsea concept of 40
subsea wells (23 producers and 17 injectors) con-
nected to a FPSO (Floating Production Storage Of-
floading) with a processing capacity of 200 kb/d and
storage of 2 Mb. Production started end of 2001
and reached rapidly 200 kb/d. In 2007, Rosa field
was connected to the Girassol FPSO in order to
compensate the decline of Girassol and maximize
the use of the installations, which will also receive
the production of neighboring resources and addi-
tional production due to technologies of improved
recovery.
• Dalia, which went on stream in December 2006,
is one of the world’s largest deepwater oil develop-
ments and the most extensive subsea system ever
deployed (71 subsea wells). Bringing it on stream
was a real feat of engineering. With viscous oil,
unconsolidated reservoirs and complex geologi-
cal structures, Dalia keeps the challenges and in-
novations coming, as it breaks new technological
ground. It took over 15 million man-hours to install
this complex industrial structure, which produces
an average of 250 kb/day.
• Launched in December 2007, Pazflor develop-
ment will boost overall production capacity to close
to 700 kb/day on Block 17. It is expected to make
Total the leading producer among international oil
companies in Angola. Pazflor will be the first field
in the world to deploy full-field subsea separation
in deep water. Production is expected for second
semester of 2011.
• 4th development on Block 17, CLOV was launched
in August 2010. Its development will concern four
fields - Cravo, Lirio, Orquidea and Violeta gathering
approximately 500 million barrels of oil. The overall
development plan for CLOV uses technologies that
have already proven effective on Girassol, Dalia
and Pazflor. A total of 34 subsea wells will be tied
back to the CLOV FPSO with a processing capac-
ity of 160,000 barrels of oil per day and a storage
capacity of approximately 1.8 million barrels. The
CLOV FPSO, through a unique processing and
storage system, will produce two types of oil from
Oligocene reservoirs (Cravo-Lirio) and from Mio-
cene reservoirs (Orquidea-Violeta).
Block 17/06 acreage, which lies outside the de-
velopment areas of Block 17, and the provisional
development area of Block 33 already brought dis-
coveries and are still being explored. They will feed
the future projects of Total in Angola.
