HP Gauff Ingenieure was founded in Nuremberg in
1958 by Engineer Helmut Gauff to provide services
from the design to the construction supervision of
different projects. Today the Gauff Group is operat-
ing worldwide in water treatment, distribution and
disposal as well as in road and railway construction.
The activity in Africa started in 1965, and since then
it has become one of its main markets, with already
10 branches in 1971.Today, Gauff is permanently
represented in almost 20 countries between the Sa-
hara and Cape Town. The mission of the company
is to fight poverty by creating sustainable jobs, to
conquer diseases by providing the access to clean
drinking water, and to facilitate economic growth by
finding innovative solutions for the development of
the entire sector of infrastructure.
The Angolan market was first approach in the 1970s
for the prospection of uranium. But Gauff was asked
to pull its activities out of the country by the German
government and could come back only in 2002. The
first job of Gauff in Angola was the deprivatization
of the Benguela railway line and the first contract of
execution of works was signed in 2004 and started
in 2006.
Gauff’s services focus on water supply as well as
waste water disposal and treatment, but it also offers
other services ranging from consultancy, feasibility
studies, project control, operation, procurement, in-
formation systems design and construction supervi-
sion to management, plant operation and organiza-
tion of the finance for the execution of the works. The
particularity of Gauff is that it does not only operate
in Luanda, but also on the mostly poorer rural areas.
With its clients and the developmental agencies,
Gauff also contributes to the development of the in-
frastructures in the transport sector by building rural
roads, multi-lane roads and bridges. It benefits from
the vast experience of more than 50 years and a
very good knowledge of Africa.
In 2010, Gauff had around 250 employees in Angola,
among them 55 are expatriates. The staff is offered
intense training at every level: mechanics, surveys,
laboratory... The focus is put on the quality of the
work; many tests are conducted to check the accept-
ability of the material to be used.
The main clients are the government of Angola, with
some institutions like the EPAL (for water) or INEA
(for road), or private companies such as the China
Roads and Bridges Construction with whom Gauff
has very good working relationships.
“To try to start up an activity in Angola, you cannot
do it from outside, you have to be present and occa-
sional visits do not work. Bring a lot of patience with
you. There are many ups and downs but after each
dark night there is a sunny day again”.
