Odebrecht, founded in 1944, is a Brazilian organi-
zation consisting of diversified businesses, with op-
erations and standards considered compatible with
top global companies. The group is present in South
America, Central America and the Caribbean, North
America, Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Ode-
brecht is mainly involved in construction works, real
estate and social works.
On a more local aspect, Odebrecht Angola was es-
tablished in 1984 during the years of the war and
has become the major construction company on the
market. Its first contract still remains Angola’s big-
gest construction project: the Capanda dam. This
dam is 110 metres high and 1,470 metres long and
forms a 170-square kilometre lake. For this project
Odebrecht trained more than 10,000 workers over
the years of construction.
Since it first started, the group has widely diversified
its projects to different provinces in order to contrib-
ute to the decentralization of the country’s economic
activities. Besides providing engineering and con-
struction services, Odebrecht has invested in its own
ventures (Atlantico Sul Condominium, Belas Shop-
ping mall, etc.) and has interests in oil prospecting
projects and diamond-mining complexes (Sociedade
Mineira de Catoca, Sociedade de Desenvolvimento
Mineiro de Angola).
But what singles out Odebrecht among other con-
struction companies is its will and effort to undertake
social works. Some of its current projects are: the
treatment of water in Luanda (benefiting about 1.6
million persons); the sanitation programme in the Lu-
anda, Samba and airport regions (drainage ditches,
sewages, public lighting and telephone systems);
and the treatment of water in Benguela, Lobito, Ca-
tumba and Baïa.
Odebrecht is confident in Angola, its people and its
future and it is contributing to the development of the
infrastructure of Angola. The company also strongly
believes that the education and training of its people
is key to achieving development. That is precisely
why the company has developed many patronage
and corporate social responsibility programmes.
These programmes consist of leadership training,
professional courses in universities, engineering
prizes, scholarships, courses for illiterate people,
fighting HIV, and building/renovating schools.
The company is therefore helping to rebuild the
country, installing infrastructure that will improve
the lives of millions of Angolans, generating wealth,
job opportunities and taxes, and training people for
work, enabling Angola to grow.
