Portuguese group Nabeiro, operating in the food
industry. The group started its activity in Angola fol-
lowing the decision of the Comendador Nabeiro who
saw the opportunity of investing in this promising
country in 1998. AngoNabeiro started its activity in a
renovated coffee factory created in the 1970s in the
area of Cacuaco, and manage to create an empire in
less than 3 years. The goal of this implantation was
to create a national coffee: Café Ginga. This project
encountered some difficulties at the beginning, dur-
ing the post-war period, as the production of coffee
beans were totally destroyed.
In 2010, the infrastructures have been greatly im-
proved and the factory has reached 50% of its pro-
duction capacity (13 tons/week), producing coffee
thanks to the national beans and imports from Brazil
and Vietnam. In fact, AngoNabeiro pays extreme at-
tention to the quality of its product. During the previ-
ous years of activity, it was quite difficult to sort out
the good sources of coffee beans as they had no
point of comparison, but after a few years in Angola,
the selection process has been carefully established
and only the best providers are retained. They are
mainly from the provinces of Uíge, Bié and Kwanza
Sul and Norte.
The roasting and commercialization of the national
coffee, café Ginga, are the main activities of Ango-
Nabeiro. The product is even exported to Portugal
as it is a rare Robusta high quality coffee extremely
appreciated in Europe. The perspectives for this
product are also bright in Angola: it is a commercial
success and the production will increase as soon
as the offer for coffee beans is sufficient. After hav-
ing secured the national market, the next step is to
develop the exports of the national Angola coffee
to other African countries, perhaps beginning with
Namíbia.
The Angolan clients for the Café Ginga are the
“HORECA”: HOtels, REstaurants, and CAfés, but
also wholesalers and supermarkets. AngoNabeiro
offers them an after-sale service for their coffee ma-
chines. To the company, every single client is impor-
tant, no matter the quantity of coffee they buy.
Even though coffee is the core business, the com-
pany also imports and distributes the Portuguese
Café Delta, and other products through different
departments: AgroDelta is specialized in agro ali-
mentary products such as olives, pickles and lupins
(tremoços) and Adega Mayor concentrates on vin-
egar, wine and oil. AngoNabeiro is also the exclu-
sive dealer of the Água Vimeiro in Angola. This di-
versification is strategic as AngoNabeiro is in contact
with the same clients, and plans to introduce more
references soon to its product line. Their activity
benefits from the reputation and extended network
of the Portuguese group Nabeiro. The structure of
the group, it long time experience and technical ex-
pertise offer a competitive advantage to the Angolan
company.
From 2005 to 2010, AngoNabeiro grew from 32 to
84 employees and still plans to recruit more workers.
They are offered very good conditions at the factory:
renovated infrastructures, medical centre, canteen...
The General Manager is Angolan and thus has a
very good knowledge of the specificities of the lo-
cal market, which allows a quick time of response.
In fact, the Angolans are still not used to drinking
coffee but they have an open mind for consuming
new products, especially if it is produced nationally.
It gives Café Ginga an undeniable advantage and
added value. AngoNabeiro won the prize of the “Ali-
menticia” fair in Luanda in September 2010.
“Angola is now in peace and the basic infrastruc-
tures have been rehabilitated. It is very attracting for
investments, especially in the agricultural sector that
receives government support. But it is primordial to
know the country and respect its people to be able
benefit from its potential.”
