CULTURE
Kuito is a peaceful town in the middle of the arid
plains at 1700 m altitude.
There you can visit the former residence of Angola’s
first President Dr Agostinho Neto, Banco nacional de
Angola of Silva Porto and Igreja de Embala Jamba.
Cristo Rei Statue: built by the Portuguese, the statue
is located at the center of the province in Kamapuca
district, 81 km far from Kuito, at the exact center of
Angola.
Other interesting archeological sites are the Paleo-
lithic cave of Rainha de Chiconde Morro Tchimbango,
located on Tchimbango mountain in Chingar (celebra-
tions on the 13th of May). Bumbo, Hundo, Lungunda
and Kajilango caves are available for a visit.

Celebrations
Local celebrations of Kuito take place between the
15th and the end of August. Other festivities include
Ayele (clowns, traditional dances with drums), Utch-
itiwo and Uvala.
The province is linked to 5 other provinces: Huambo,
Kwanza Sul, Kuando Kubango, Malanje and Moxico,
which gives the province a strategic position at the
center of the country. It has been heavily damaged
during the war but has rapidly transformed over the
last years.
The dominant ethnic group is Ovimbundu and main
activity is agriculture that benefits from an extensive
network of the Kwanza, Luando, Kunhinga and Cune
rivers.
The Joaquim Kapango airport in Kuito is designed
for small and medium aircrafts. Diexim expresso
operates flights there. Other small airports are avail-
able at Andulo, Kuemba, Chitembo and Kamacupa.
