After the Portuguese established their slave trade
settlement in Cabinda in the 15th century, the prov-
ince became of the main trading center in West Af-
rica. Slaves from all over the country were sent to
Cabinda to be transported to Europe, Brazil and São
Tomé.
Under Portuguese rule, the territory of Cabinda, then
called Portuguese Congo, developed as an impor-
tant agricultural and forestry centre, and in 1967
huge offshore oil fields are discovered.
Although the province lives essencially with the oil
industry, other substantial revenues are generated
in agriculture (essentially cacao, coffee, rubber and
palm oil), cattle breding and timber industry. The
Maiombe forest is well known for its density, luxuri-
ous vegetation and rare species of butterflies.
The region is very deeply influenced with tradition
that has been transmitted especially thanks to the
Bakama ethnicity that includes the very distinc-
tive Kizo people from Kizo mount, famous for their
elegant masks used in rituals. They attend the city
celebration day with painted masks and dried ba-
nana leaves. Most of them have Bakongo origins,
it includes the following clans: Bawoyo, Bakoki, Bal-
ingi, Bayombe and Basundi. Main language is ibinda
(called kiombe at north and kiwoyo at south).
